What they need

Ready to solve tough field problems and keep power flowing?

Imagine arriving on site with a clear plan, a calibrated test kit, and the responsibility to make mission-critical equipment perform flawlessly. At Powell, our Service Technologists install, commission, maintain, and repair AC/DC switchgear and PCRs across the US and Canada—wherever customers need power systems to be safe, compliant, and dependable.

Your mission

Own the full lifecycle of service delivery—safety first, documentation tight, communication clear, and testing thorough—while traveling extensively (up to 85%) across West Coast, Gulf Coast South, offshore, and East Coast territories.

How you'll contribute

  • Adhere to Powell safety and quality standards; follow SOPs and required documentation processes.
  • Install and commission switchgear and power control rooms; shift between in-house fabrication support and leading small site crews as needed.
  • Perform testing: insulation (megger), ductor, Hi-Pot, torque, and mechanical/functional verifications on Powell equipment.
  • Inspect your assigned vehicle and calibrated tools to ensure readiness and accuracy.
  • Service and troubleshoot PowlVac breakers; complete repairs and upgrades/retrofits.
  • Keep stakeholders aligned—provide regular schedule updates to the Field Operations Scheduler and District Service Manager; collaborate with PMs, customers, vendors, and labor support.
  • Close jobs cleanly with timely timesheets, signed service/repair orders, materials logs, and clear narrative reports.

What you bring

  • 2+ years as a shop and/or field electrical/breaker technician.
  • Familiarity with ANSI/IEEE C37, device function numbers, conductor ampacities in switchgear, and creepage/clearance requirements.
  • Ability to produce accurate reports and explain basic anomalies found on a project.
  • Baseline skills in bus/structural modifications and control-circuit fundamentals (Ohm's Law; AC/DC theory).
  • Team mindset with the ability to assist senior technicians on maintenance, installations, upgrades, and retrofills.

Bonus points

  • Breaker/contactor schematic literacy.
  • Experience with Hi-Pot and low resistance testing.
  • Mechanical/electrical functional testing of breakers and switchgear.
  • NICET Level 1.
  • HUET/Offshore Survival Training (we can provide).
  • NFPA 70E (we can provide training).
  • OSHA 10/30 (we can provide training).

What we provide

  • Safety and technical training with full office support.
  • Upon qualification: a company vehicle, standard tooling, test equipment, laptop, phone compensation, and a company expense card.

Where you'll work

Industrial environments throughout the continental US. Expect local and domestic travel, heights over 10 ft, ladder work, and occasional scissor/bucket lift operation. Role requires medium physical effort (up to 50 lbs) and extended periods of standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, and sitting.

Proficiencies we value

  • 120/208/240/480 Voltage Systems
  • Electrical Installation
  • Electrical Systems & Diagnostics (Heavy Equipment)
  • OSHA 30
  • Switchgear
  • Welding
  • NFPA 70E

Physical Demands

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

In addition, employees will be required to complete and pass Company and Customer required drug screening, background and employment verification checks, maintaining eligibility throughout employment.
