Role Summary

We are looking for an experienced Lead Engineer – Switchgear Product Engineering & PLM Data Transformation to lead a major engineering data transformation program for medium/high-voltage switchgear products.

The role will be responsible for leading the technical team in reviewing and improving existing CAD models, engineering drawings, assemblies, BOMs, fasteners and product structures, and preparing the engineering data for migration into a PLM environment.

This is not a conventional CAD management role . The person must have strong switchgear/product engineering knowledge and be capable of making engineering decisions around product architecture, design standardization, configurability, manufacturability and reuse.

The Lead Engineer will work closely with the customer’s engineering team and will lead a small team of senior/junior engineers responsible for the detailed execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Switchgear Product Engineering

  • Understand switchgear product architecture, components, assemblies and manufacturing requirements.

  • Review existing switchgear products and identify engineering gaps, inconsistencies and opportunities for standardization.

  • Provide engineering judgment on part design, interfaces, mounting arrangements and assembly structures.

  • Review whether drawings contain sufficient information for manufacturing by a qualified supplier.

  • Support resolution of complex engineering and design issues.

  • CAD & Drawing Engineering

  • Lead the technical review of Autodesk Inventor CAD models and engineering drawings.

  • Establish and enforce consistent CAD modeling practices.

  • Review dimensions, GD&T, materials, finishes, tolerances and manufacturing definitions.

  • Identify incorrect, incomplete or duplicate engineering data.

  • Define rules for modeling, drafting and engineering documentation.

  • Guide the execution team on complex CAD and drawing issues.

  • Product Architecture & Modularization

  • Develop hierarchical product structures covering:

  • Product → Assembly → Subassembly → Part

  • Identify common and variant-specific components.

  • Develop reusable product building blocks for different switchgear configurations.

  • Rationalize existing assemblies to reduce duplication.

  • Define engineering structures that can support future product configurator requirements.

  • Review component interfaces and compatibility across product variants.

  • Engineering Standardization

  • Develop and implement common engineering standards for:

  • CAD modeling

  • Drawing creation

  • GD&T

  • Dimensioning

  • Material specification

  • Surface finish

  • Naming and numbering

  • Revision control

  • Standard components

  • Fasteners

  • Ensure the standards are practical and can be adopted by the customer’s engineering organization.

  • BOM & Engineering Data

  • Review and restructure Engineering BOMs.

  • Establish correct relationships between parts, drawings, assemblies and product structures.

  • Identify duplicate, obsolete or incorrectly defined components.

  • Standardize engineering part numbers and naming conventions.

  • Ensure engineering data is complete and consistent across the product.

  • Fastener & Standard Component Management

  • Review existing fastener usage and definitions.

  • Establish standard fastener libraries and usage rules.

  • Ensure standard and custom fasteners are properly defined within the engineering environment.

  • Support standardization of commonly used mechanical components.

  • PLM Readiness

  • Work with the customer’s PLM team to understand the required Windchill data structure and metadata.

  • Ensure engineering data is cleansed and structured before migration.

  • Review:

  • Part and document metadata

  • Revision/version information

  • CAD relationships

  • BOM structures

  • Naming and numbering

  • Required attributes

  • Product hierarchy

  • Ensure the engineering dataset is suitable for controlled PLM migration.

  • Team Leadership

  • Lead a team of approximately 3–5 engineers/designers.

  • Allocate work based on technical complexity and engineer capability.

  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring.

  • Review critical engineering outputs before customer submission.

  • Establish quality gates for the execution team.

  • Monitor progress, quality and delivery against project milestones.

  • Escalate technical risks and delivery issues early.

  • Customer Interaction

  • Act as the primary technical interface with the customer’s engineering team.

  • Participate in technical discussions and design reviews.

  • Clarify engineering requirements.

  • Present findings, recommendations and proposed solutions.

  • Drive resolution of technical issues without depending on the customer for every engineering decision.

  • Build confidence with customer engineering stakeholders.

Essential Required Technical Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical/product engineering.
  • Strong experience with switchgear, electrical equipment, industrial products or closely related engineered products.
  • Strong understanding of product assemblies and mechanical component design.
  • Hands-on experience with Autodesk Inventor or a comparable 3D CAD system.
  • Strong understanding of engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerances, materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with Engineering BOM / EBOM structures.
  • Experience in product standardization and engineering data management.
  • Experience leading engineering teams or technical projects.
  • Ability to independently make engineering decisions.
