What they need
12V Electrical Wiring Technician
Starting Wage: $23 to $25/hour | 90-Day Performance and Pay Review
Solar Van Man® builds and upgrades LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) battery-based electrical and energy systems in motorhomes, camper vans, camping trailers, and fifth wheels.
We hire for Attitude and Aptitude and train for specialized skills.
Experience with automotive wiring, car audio, alarms and remote start, 12V accessories, marine electronics, or electrical installations is helpful. Being great at working with your hands is mandatory.
What Matters at Solar Van Man®
- We obsess over workmanship quality and cleanliness, working on million-dollar coaches.
- We route, label, secure, protect, and terminate wiring to exacting professional standards.
- We protect conductors from abrasion and heat.
- We mount components cleanly and securely.
- We build serviceable systems that technicians can understand and service years later.
We work hard, help each other, and have plenty of laughs—but the work comes first.
We do not accept “good enough.” We work on every coach as though we were loading our family into it and leaving tomorrow headed for the Alaska Highway.
Traits and Skills
- Bring strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability.
- Use hand and power tools wisely, confidently, and safely.
- Learn new systems quickly and understand why they work.
- Work productively without an over-the-shoulder hand holder.
- Keep tools and work areas organized.
- Produce clean, deliberate work.
- Show up reliably and promptly and work productively.
- Limit personal cell-phone use during working time to emergencies and necessary job-related use.
- Own the finished result.
Driving Is Part of the Job
You must be an excellent, cautious driver with a valid driver’s license.
We move customer-owned vans and motorhomes daily in and around the shop. We work on large, expensive coaches that demand extreme caution, sound and deliberate judgment, spatial awareness, patience, and careful maneuvering.
Final-round candidates must authorize an MVR review and criminal background screening. Employment requires insurability under our company policy.
Physical Requirements
RV work requires working in unusual spaces and positions.
You must be able to:
- Work safely in tight compartments and confined spaces.
- Work safely and comfortably at heights, including climbing ladders and working on RV roofs.
- Kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, reach, and work in awkward positions.
- Safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted.
- Participate in team lifts for heavier batteries, equipment, and components.
Solar Van Man® provides the tools and specialized equipment required for the job.
What You Will Learn
We will train the right person in lithium battery systems, solar charging, DC-DC alternator charging, inverters, shore-power systems, system monitoring, troubleshooting, RV electrical systems, and the specific equipment we install.
You are not expected to understand LFP battery-based RV energy systems when you arrive.
You do need to arrive mechanically capable, willing to learn, and determined to produce first-rate work.
Compensation
Starting pay is between $23 and $25/hour for the first 90 days, with a performance and pay review after you complete the probationary period.
Exceptional performance can earn an increase based on demonstrated workmanship, productivity, reliability, judgment, and technical ability.
If you are good with your hands, work cleanly, know wiring and multimeter electrical testing—or have a burning desire to learn them—and love to work hard, we want to hear from you.
Schedule
Full-time, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM. Periodic overtime may be required.
After completing the 90-day probationary period, we may consider reasonable schedule flexibility for the right employee when it works with shop coverage and customer commitments.
Benefits
After successful completion of the 90-day probationary period, employees receive eight paid company holidays:
New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.
Paid leave is provided in accordance with Illinois law.
