5G/6G Network Systems Research Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a Network Systems Research Engineer to join a research team building next-generation networking technologies for Physical AI and embodied intelligence. The role centres on designing intelligent, deterministic, action-aware network systems that enable seamless interaction between perception, AI reasoning, and robotic actuation — spanning network architecture, protocols, resource management, and AI-native networking for future 5G/6G systems and their standardisation.

Key responsibilities

• Research 5G/6G network systems for Physical AI and embodied intelligence applications.
• Design novel network architectures, algorithms, and protocols for deterministic, low-latency communications.
• Develop network resource management, scheduling, routing, and orchestration techniques for QoA-aware networking.
• Design and evaluate network control frameworks using technologies such as SDN, TSN, O-RAN, and edge computing.
• Build software prototypes, simulations, and proof-of-concept demonstrators.
• Evaluate proposed solutions through analytical modelling, simulation, and experimental validation.
• Publish research findings in leading conferences and journals, and contribute to patent generation.
• Participate in international standardisation activities (e.g. 3GPP, IEEE, IETF, O-RAN Alliance) where appropriate.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams and external partners.

About you

• PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Research background in communication networks, network systems, distributed systems, or related fields.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Experience in algorithm design, software development, or network system prototyping.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct research and publish in reputable conferences and/or journals.
• Good programming skills (e.g. Python, C/C++, Go, or similar).
• Preferred: Deterministic Networking (DetNet) and Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN); Software-Defined Networking (SDN); O-RAN and RAN Intelligent Controllers (RIC); edge computing and cloud-native networking; network slicing and resource orchestration; network protocol/API design; traffic engineering and routing.
• Preferred: AI-native networking and network automation; mathematical optimisation and performance modelling; network simulation/emulation (e.g. ns-3, OMNeT++, Mininet, OpenAirInterface); network digital twins.
• Preferred: 3GPP 5G/6G systems; robotics, teleoperation, embodied intelligence, or Physical AI; experience contributing to standards development.
