Company Overview
Floor Plus More, Inc. is a flooring supply retailer and installation services company based in North Carolina, USA. We provide quality flooring products and professional installation services, supporting customers from product selection through project completion. We are committed to dependable service, quality workmanship, and customer satisfaction.
Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Accountant to support the financial operations of our flooring supply retail and installation business. This position will be responsible for maintaining accurate accounting records while closely monitoring the financial activity associated with flooring sales, material purchases, inventory, installation labor, subcontractors, and individual customer jobs.
The ideal candidate understands that profitability in a flooring business depends on more than accurate bookkeeping. This role will help ensure that materials, supplies, installer costs, purchase orders, invoices, customer payments, and other job-related expenses are properly recorded and assigned to the correct project.
The Accountant will work closely with Sales, Operations, Installation, Warehouse/Purchasing, and Management to maintain strong financial controls and provide timely reporting on company and job performance.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Management
Maintain accurate general ledger and accounting records.
Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end closing documentation.
Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, loans, and other balance sheet accounts.
Assist with monthly financial statements, including Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet reporting.
Maintain organized supporting documentation for financial transactions.
Assist management with budgets, forecasts, and financial analysis.
Job Costing & Installation Accounting
Maintain accurate job-cost records for flooring installation projects.
Ensure materials, supplies, freight, installer labor, subcontractor charges, equipment, and
other direct costs are assigned to the correct job.
Compare estimated job costs to actual costs.
Monitor gross profit and job profitability.
Identify cost variances, missing costs, or expenses charged to an incorrect job.
Review completed jobs for financial accuracy before final closeout.
Provide management with reporting on job revenue, cost, gross profit, and gross-profit percentage.
Inventory & Material Control
Reconcile flooring and installation-material purchases with purchase orders, receiving records, vendor invoices, and job documentation.
Work with warehouse and operations personnel to help maintain accurate inventory records.
Monitor materials transferred from store inventory to installation jobs to ensure they are properly documented and charged.
Assist with inventory counts and reconciliation of discrepancies.
Monitor returns, credits, damaged materials, excess materials, and unused materials
returned from jobs.
Accounts Payable
Review vendor and/or subcontractor invoices for accuracy and proper authorization.
Match invoices with purchase orders, receipts, and job documentation when applicable.
Ensure expenses are coded to the correct general ledger account and customer/job.
Process vendor payments in accordance with company approval procedures.
Reconcile vendor statements and resolve discrepancies.
Maintain accurate subcontractor and vendor records.
Accounts Receivable & Collections
Generate and review customer invoices.
Ensure deposits, progress payments, final invoices, credits, and adjustments are accurately recorded.
Apply customer payments to the appropriate invoices and accounts.
Monitor outstanding accounts receivable and aging.
Follow up on past-due balances and assist with collection efforts.
Research billing discrepancies and coordinate resolution with Sales and Operations.
Internal Controls & Documentation
Help maintain controls for purchasing, purchase orders, material releases, installer payments, and job-cost allocation.
Verify that required documentation and approvals are received before processing transactions.
Help identify duplicate invoices, unauthorized purchases, missing documentation, or unusual job costs.
Maintain strong separation and documentation of retail inventory versus materials consumed on installation jobs.
Qualifications
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
Previous accounting or bookkeeping experience required.
Experience in flooring, construction, retail, distribution, installation services, or another job-costing environment strongly preferred.
Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger accounting, and bank reconciliations.
Strong understanding of job costing and gross-profit analysis.
Experience working with inventory and purchase-order processes preferred.
Proficiency with accounting software such as QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel.
Strong spreadsheet, reconciliation, and analytical skills.
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to research discrepancies and follow transactions from purchase through job completion.
Ability to communicate effectively with accounting, sales, warehouse, field installation, vendors, subcontractors, and management.
This is a fully remote position, and the candidate is required to use their own equipment (laptop, computer peripherals, internet connection, and appropriate backups).
What We're Looking For
The successful candidate is someone who doesn't simply enter transactions. We're looking for an accountant who asks why the numbers don't match and follows the transaction until the issue is resolved.
You will be a strong fit if you:
Understand the relationship between sales, purchasing, inventory, installation, invoicing, collections, and profitability.
Can identify when costs are missing from a flooring installation job.
Are comfortable communicating with installers, project personnel, sales representatives,
and vendors to resolve discrepancies.
Understand the importance of accurate purchase orders and job-cost coding.
Can manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Take ownership of reconciliations and follow issues through to resolution.
Understand that accurate job costing is essential to knowing whether a project was truly
profitable.
