What they need

Accounting Assistant

Full-Time | On-Site | Easton, PA

About the role

With roots dating back to 1939, Famous Smoke Shop-PA, Inc. and Cigar Works, LLC, doing business as Famous Cigars, are seeking an Accounting Assistant to support daily accounting activities and build practical experience with reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close. This entry-level opportunity is suited to someone with limited related experience or a bookkeeping background who wants to develop their accounting skills.

You will work under the direction and review of experienced accounting staff. A college degree is not required. Training and feedback are part of the role, with opportunities to take on more responsibility as your skills develop.

Initial focus and development

The initial assignment is expected to be fully focused on Cigar Works, LLC, supporting the Famous retail store and Leaf restaurant and lounge. As you become proficient, we anticipate approximately 50% of your work will continue to support Cigar Works, with the remaining time supporting the broader Famous Smoke Shop business. The timing and allocation will depend on your progress and business needs.

What you will do

  • Assist with daily and monthly bank, cash, credit-card, and payment-platform reconciliations.
  • Help reconcile retail and restaurant and bar sales activity, with e-commerce responsibilities added as your scope expands.
  • Support accounts payable and accounts receivable activities; review invoices and supporting records for accuracy.
  • Prepare routine journal entries, account reconciliations, and accounting schedules for review and approval.
  • Assist with month-end close, including accruals, prepaid expense schedules, and inventory-related accounting and reporting.
  • Research differences between accounting records and operating systems, document findings, and bring unresolved items to the reviewing accountant.
  • Prepare recurring Excel reports, maintain organized workpapers, and gather documents for audit and tax requests.
  • Learn company accounting systems and internal controls, and assist with other accounting and finance projects as assigned.

What you will bring

  • Limited related work experience or practical bookkeeping experience. A college degree or formal accounting education is not required.
  • Comfort working with numbers and financial records, and a willingness to learn accounting principles and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and the ability to organize and review financial information.
  • Attention to detail, strong organization, and the willingness to ask questions, learn new systems, and apply feedback.
  • Clear written and verbal communication and the ability to handle confidential information appropriately. Helpful but not required
  • Some college coursework in accounting, business, or a related subject, or a related degree.
  • Internship, bookkeeping, office, retail, or hospitality experience.
  • Experience with Excel formulas, pivot tables, lookups, or an ERP or accounting system.

What you will learn

You will learn to prepare accounting work that can be reviewed and traced back to supporting records. You will begin with retail and restaurant operations, learning how sales, payments, expenses, and inventory affect the financial statements before expanding into other parts of the business.

Benefits

Eligible employees have access to the following benefits:

  • Medical insurance with multiple plan options.
  • Dental and vision insurance.
  • Company-paid basic life and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance.
  • Company-paid short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan with a company match, available after one year of service.
  • Optional employee-paid supplemental life, accident, critical illness, and hospital indemnity insurance.

Benefits are subject to applicable eligibility requirements, waiting periods, and plan terms.
