Position Overview
The Controller is Signature's owner of financial data integrity. Your job is to make sure the numbers are accurate, reconciled, and trustworthy: you own the monthly close, keep every subledger tied to the general ledger, maintain strong controls, and deliver financial reporting the CEO can make decisions on. As the company grows, you keep the books clean, dependable, and audit-ready. Our growth has outpaced our financial processes, and you'll lead the work to close that gap. This is a hands-on accounting role. You report directly to the CEO, work alongside the company's CPA, and partner with the in-house technology lead who maintains our order and fulfillment system. Over time, you will lead and grow the in-house accounting team and bring the day-to-day work in-house.
Key ResponsibilitiesI. Data integrity and the monthly close
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, and deliver accurate, timely financial statements.
- Reconcile the bank, credit card, receivable, payable, and balance-sheet accounts, and keep every subledger tied to the general ledger.
- Maintain a clean chart of accounts and accurate, consistent transaction coding.
- Own and continually improve a documented monthly close process.
II. Accrual accounting and revenue recognition
- Keep the books on an accrual basis: recognize revenue as orders are fulfilled, defer customer deposits, and accrue product costs so revenue and cost land in the same period.
- Own the recurring month-end accruals, including payroll, commissions, and prepaids.
III. Order-to-cash and accounts receivable
- Ensure customer payments across all sales channels are applied accurately so receivables stay clean, partnering with the technology lead on how orders and payments flow into the accounting system.
- Oversee collections and receivables aging with the billing team, and keep receivables healthy.
IV. Accounts payable, inventory, and compliance
- Own accounts payable controls, including approval limits and vendor verification, so payments are accurate and secure.
- Own the accounting for product purchasing: match purchase orders, invoices, and receipts, and accrue costs appropriately.
- Maintain the records and processes that keep the company compliant with import and customs requirements.
- Maintain inventory records.
V. Reporting and cash visibility
- Deliver accurate, timely reporting and the key metrics leadership relies on.
- Maintain a rolling 13-week cash forecast, updated weekly, so the business can plan with confidence.
- Own the annual budget: report actual results against it monthly, update the forecast as the business changes, and lead development of future annual budgets with department leaders.
- Give the CEO accurate, reconciled numbers to support cash and investment decisions.
VI. Financial decision support
- Analyze profitability by customer segment, sales channel, and product line, so leadership knows where the business makes money.
- Model the financial terms of partnership, licensing, and sponsorship agreements before they're signed.
- Build and maintain customer lifetime value and acquisition cost metrics, so we can see which growth efforts pay off.
- Evaluate major spending decisions, such as new hires, equipment, and programs, including their impact on cash.
- Show how pricing and discount changes affect margin.
VII. Tax and compliance
- Partner with the company's CPA on income tax, and coordinate multi-state sales-tax compliance.
- Ensure sales tax and payroll taxes are handled and verified correctly.
VIII. Team and systems
- Bring our financial processes up to the standard of a company our size. Assess what's in place, find the gaps, and build the controls, documentation, and repeatable processes that let finance grow with the business.
- Lead and develop the finance team member, set clear roles for preparing, reviewing, and approving work, and bring day-to-day accounting fully in-house.
- Own the accuracy of the company's accounting systems and the data within them.
Essential Requirements
- Five or more years of accounting experience, with at least two in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting role.
- Experience owning a full monthly close and accrual-basis accounting.
- Strong QuickBooks Online skills, with experience in inventory and cost of goods sold.
- Familiarity with multi-state sales-tax compliance, payroll, and accounts-payable controls.
- Product, manufacturing, or e-commerce experience is a strong plus.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA or CMA is a plus but not required.
- Meticulous and accuracy-obsessed, with a strong sense of ownership over the integrity of the numbers, and comfortable working hands-on in a lean team.
- This role operates in a fast-paced production environment where priorities may shift quickly. The ability to adapt, stay organized, and maintain urgency without sacrificing accuracy is critical to success.
Why You’ll Love Working Here
- Family-owned company with a strong sense of purpose and pride.
- Fast-paced, growth-oriented culture where your work directly impacts results.
- Supportive team environment — we work hard, celebrate often, and help each other succeed.
- Meaningful work creating championship rings that celebrate achievement.
- Competitive pay, performance incentives, and opportunities for growth.
