What they need
Property Upsurge is a dynamic, local real estate investment firm that is growing throughout Northern California. We broker new real estate deals, perform the revitalization of dilapidated properties, and run a property management company. Our company has an upbeat, exciting culture and no two days are the same in our organization.
We are seeking a hands-on Accounting Manager to support our accounting and financial operations for an anticipated period of approximately 6 to 12 months.
This is an individual-contributor position reporting directly to the CFO. The role does not currently have direct reports. Because we are a small company, the Accounting Manager will be expected to move comfortably between higher-level accounting review and day-to-day transactional work as business needs require.
The successful candidate will help maintain accurate financial records, support month-end close, review accounting activity for accuracy and completeness, assist with financial statement preparation and review, and support a variety of recurring and ad hoc accounting functions.
Key Responsibilities
- Review the prior day’s journal entries and financial transactions for accuracy, appropriate coding, supporting documentation, and unusual activity.
- Review general ledger activity and identify errors, inconsistencies, or items requiring adjustment.
- Assist with the month-end close process, including adjusting entries, account review, and financial statement preparation.
- Review financial statements prior to issuance for accuracy, completeness, and reasonableness.
- Prepare and post adjusting journal entries, including entries related to mortgage principal, interest, escrow activity, and other financing transactions.
- Reconcile bank accounts on a regular basis.
- Book corporate credit card transactions, maintain supporting documentation, and complete monthly credit card reconciliations.
- Perform and support day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payment processing, and transaction coding.
- Assist with vendor invoice review, payment scheduling, receivable follow-up, and resolution of account discrepancies.
- Monitor outstanding reconciliation items and work with the CFO and accounting team to resolve discrepancies.
- Maintain and help improve accounting procedures, documentation, and internal controls.
- Support annual audit, tax, insurance, and other financial information requests as needed.
- Manage the Company’s commercial insurance policies, including renewals, documentation, policy administration, and coordination with brokers.
- Oversee the rent increase process across the managed property portfolio, including tracking, documentation, coordination with operations staff, and completion monitoring.
- Complete ad hoc accounting, financial, operational, and reporting projects as assigned by the CFO.
- Assist with accounting cleanup, process improvement initiatives, and other financial projects as business needs arise.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Approximately 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally including experience at the Senior Accountant and Accounting Manager level.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, general ledger accounting, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
- Experience participating in or supporting a monthly close process.
- Working knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and other transactional accounting functions.
- Ability to review accounting work critically and identify errors, unusual transactions, or areas requiring follow-up.
- Strong Excel skills.
- Experience working in a small or mid-sized company where accounting professionals are expected to be both hands-on and analytical.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple recurring deadlines.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- High attention to detail and sound professional judgment.
Experience with property management accounting, Buildium, QuickBooks, commercial insurance administration, or real-estate-related accounting is preferred but not required.
