About the Company
Handsome Homebuyer is one of Long Island’s fastest-growing real estate investment companies, specializing in acquiring, renovating, developing, and selling properties.
As we continue to grow, we are seeking a results-driven Accounting Manager to oversee key accounting functions, strengthen financial processes, and support the company’s continued growth and success.
About the Role
The Accounting Manager will be the operational leader of Handsome’s accounting function and a key partner to the VP of Finance. This is a hands-on role for someone who can own the general ledger and month-end close while also designing stronger processes, controls, and documentation. The Accounting Manager will supervise and develop the A/P Specialist, coordinate with property and operations leaders, and help transition recurring accounting activities from the company’s outsourced provider to a sustainable internal model. The right candidate combines strong technical accounting judgment with an operator’s mindset. You should be comfortable moving between detailed reconciliations, multi-entity accounting, process improvement, team leadership, and explaining financial issues clearly to non-accounting partners.
Responsibilities
- Lead the monthly close across multiple legal entities and QBO instances, with a goal of delivering a controlled financial package by business day five.
- Own general-ledger integrity, including account reconciliations, accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, debt, cash, revenue recognition, WIP, intercompany activity, allocations, and consolidation support.
- Prepare and review journal entries, account analyses, rollforwards, and supporting schedules; ensure every material balance has complete and auditable support.
- Build and maintain the close calendar, checklist, preparer/reviewer assignments, daily issue log, and escalation process.
- Supervise, coach, and cross-train the A/P Specialist; establish priorities, review work quality, and create reliable backup coverage.
- Administer disciplined procure-to-pay controls, including vendor setup, invoice coding, approval evidence, payment-batch review, duplicate-payment prevention, and vendor bank-change verification.
- Prepare bank and credit-card reconciliations independently from employees who process deposits or payments; investigate unusual or stale reconciling items.
- Reconcile property-management activity, tenant receipts, receivables, deposits, and the general ledger by property and legal entity.
- Maintain and reconcile intercompany balances across the organization; ensure both sides are recorded in the same period and support elimination entries.
- Maintain debt, investor obligation, notes-receivable, fixed-asset, insurance, property-tax, and entity-compliance schedules.
- Support project and renovation accounting through job-cost, committed-cost, change-order, WIP, capitalization, and margin-at-completion reviews.
- Review payroll registers and approved employee changes; coordinate accurate payroll entries and funding while preserving access segregation.
- Develop documented accounting policies, standard operating procedures, reconciliation standards, and evidence-retention practices.
- Execute and test internal controls; maintain the control exception register and drive timely remediation.
- Partner with the VP of Finance on monthly financial packages, variance analysis, audit/tax support, forecasts, KPI reporting, and leadership requests.
- Lead knowledge transfer, shadowing, reverse-shadowing, and ownership transition from the outsourced accounting provider.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
Required Skills
- At least five years of progressive accounting experience, including meaningful ownership of month-end close and balance-sheet reconciliations.
- Prior experience supervising or reviewing the work of accounting staff.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and practical accounting controls.
- Hands-on QuickBooks Online experience; experience working across multiple entities or company files is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to reconcile cash, debt, intercompany accounts, fixed assets, accruals, and complex balance-sheet activity.
- Advanced Excel skills and comfort organizing data from multiple operational sources.
- Strong written documentation, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a changing environment, prioritize material risks, and build sustainable processes without losing attention to detail.
Preferred Skills
- Real estate investment, property management, construction/project accounting, private lending, brokerage, or another multi-entity operating environment.
- Job-cost and WIP accounting, property-level reporting, investor or debt schedules, consolidation/elimination support, and accounting-function insourcing.
- CPA or CPA-track experience is valued but not required.
Benefits
- Medical, Dental, Vision coverage, and 401(k)
- Generous 4 weeks of paid time off
- Company-paid holidays
- Homebuyers Assistance Program
- Career growth, professional development, and learning opportunities
