Salary Type: Hourly
Compensation: $40/hour | Part-time, up to 20 hours/week

Organization Overview

Breathe New Hampshire is a nonprofit public health agency committed to eliminating lung disease and improving the quality of life for those living with respiratory conditions across the state. Through education, advocacy, and partnerships, we address key lung health issues such as asthma, COPD, vaping, air quality, and climate-related health impacts.

Position Summary

Breathe New Hampshire is seeking a detail-oriented Accounting Manager to oversee the organization’s day-to-day accounting and provide clear, reliable financial information to its leadership. Reporting to the Co-Presidents & CEOs, this hands-on role combines routine accounting and payroll responsibilities with financial reporting, nonprofit fund tracking, and support for budgeting, audits, and required filings. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently, uses sound judgment, and can manage recurring accounting processes efficiently while knowing when to flag questions or seek guidance. The organization’s leadership and external professional advisors provide collaboration and support for specialized reporting and compliance needs.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting and Nonprofit Financial Reporting

· Maintain accurate accounting records in accordance with GAAP, applicable nonprofit accounting practices, and organizational procedures.

· Manage day-to-day accounting, including accounts payable and receivable, general ledger entries, revenue and expense recording, bank and account reconciliations, cash management, and investment transactions.

· Track revenue and expenses by fund, program, and grant, including donor-restricted and unrestricted funds; maintain accurate reporting of net assets with and without donor restrictions.

· Monitor grant spending, funding restrictions, and reporting deadlines, and provide supporting financial information for grant and donor reports in coordination with staff.

· Prepare monthly financial statements, budget-to-actual reports, and concise explanations of significant variances for the Co-Presidents & CEOs.

· Reconcile revenue between the accounting system and development database and follow up on discrepancies with relevant staff.

Budgeting and Leadership Support

· Assist the Co-Presidents & CEOs and staff with preparation of the annual budget and monitor actual results against budget.

· Prepare financial reports and supporting materials for the Treasurer, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors, as requested.

· Identify discrepancies or opportunities to improve accounting processes and internal controls, and bring significant issues to leadership’s attention.

Payroll, Audit, and Required Reporting

· Process biweekly payroll and reconcile payroll records, tax deposits, retirement contributions, and related reporting with the payroll and benefits providers.

· Maintain organized schedules and documentation for the annual independent audit and support the external professionals responsible for preparing IRS Form 990 and other applicable filings.

· Help track recurring financial and reporting deadlines and provide accounting records or schedules needed by the Co-Presidents & CEOs for applicable New Hampshire charitable registration and state reporting.

Annual Audit and Tax Reporting

· Maintain and organize financial records, reconciliations, schedules, and supporting documentation for the annual independent audit.

· Coordinate with external auditors by gathering requested financial information and documentation and responding to follow-up requests in a timely manner.

· Support IRS Form 990 preparation by providing financial records and supporting documentation to the external auditors or tax professionals responsible for preparing the return.

· Track deadlines and outstanding requests and assist with resolving questions or discrepancies identified during the audit.

Records and General Support

· Maintain orderly, secure financial records and supporting documentation in accordance with organizational record-retention practices.

· Keep basic accounting procedures and recurring schedules current to support consistency and continuity.

· Protect confidential financial, donor, and employee information and perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

· At least five years of relevant accounting or bookkeeping experience; nonprofit experience is strongly preferred.

· Working knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting, with an understanding of or willingness to work with nonprofit fund accounting, donor restrictions, and grant tracking.

· Experience with account reconciliations, financial statements, budgeting support, and audit preparation.

· Experience with payroll processing and related reporting requirements preferred.

· Proficiency in QuickBooks and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.

· Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through, with the ability to resolve routine issues efficiently and manage recurring tasks independently.

· Sound judgment and analytical skills, including the ability to recognize discrepancies, explain financial information clearly, and know when an issue needs leadership or professional review.
