What they need

Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACT/ACPT)

Current GPhC registration and a recognised accuracy-checking qualification are essential.

Job Summary

We are seeking a qualified, organised and proactive Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician to join our pharmacy team.

You will play a key role in ensuring that medicines are dispensed accurately, patients receive a reliable service, and dispensary operations run efficiently. Working alongside the Responsible Pharmacist and wider pharmacy team, you will undertake final accuracy checks within your competence, accreditation and our standard operating procedures.

This role suits a professional who combines exceptional attention to detail with sound judgement, clear communication and a strong commitment to patient safety.

Key Responsibilities

Final accuracy checking and patient safety

  • Perform the final accuracy check of prescriptions dispensed by other team members, following completion of the pharmacist’s clinical check and in accordance with the pharmacy’s checking procedures.
  • Verify the correct patient, medicine, strength, formulation, quantity, labelling, packaging and accompanying information.
  • Check expiry dates, product integrity and any relevant storage or handling requirements.
  • Identify dispensing discrepancies, arrange corrective action and refer clinical concerns or unresolved queries to the pharmacist.
  • Maintain a clear audit trail of checks, interventions, near misses and dispensing incidents.
  • Work within the limits of your competence and authorisation, maintaining the required independence between dispensing and final checking.

Dispensing and dispensary operations

  • Support prescription processing, labelling and dispensing when required, ensuring your own dispensed work receives an independent final check.
  • Help organise workload and prioritise urgent prescriptions, owing items, delivery schedules and care-home medication cycles.
  • Use patient medication record systems and the Electronic Prescription Service accurately, maintaining complete and confidential records.
  • Liaise with patients, carers, GP practices, care homes and other healthcare professionals to resolve administrative prescription queries.
  • Support the safe handling of controlled drugs within your authorised responsibilities and the pharmacy’s procedures.
  • Assist with monitored dosage systems and other compliance aids where appropriate.
  • Support care-home dispensing, medication administration records and electronic MAR processes, where provided by the pharmacy.
  • Help ensure medicines prepared for collection or delivery are correctly identified, packaged and stored.

Stock management and quality assurance

  • Support stock ordering, receipt, rotation and expiry-date monitoring.
  • Manage shortages and owing items, escalating concerns promptly to the pharmacist.
  • Monitor medicine storage conditions, including refrigerator temperatures and cold-chain requirements.
  • Assist with medicine recalls, quarantined stock, returns and appropriate disposal.
  • Follow standard operating procedures and contribute to audits, incident reviews and service improvements.
  • Support infection prevention, workplace safety, confidentiality and information governance.

Teamwork and professional development

  • Support and mentor dispensers, trainee pharmacy technicians and other colleagues within your competence.
  • Promote consistent dispensing standards and a supportive, accountable team culture.
  • Communicate clearly with patients and provide information within your competence, referring clinical advice to the pharmacist when required.
  • Maintain your GPhC registration, professional development and accuracy-checking competence, including any required reassessment or revalidation.
  • Support additional pharmacy services where appropriately trained, competent and authorised.

Essential Requirements

  • Current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as a pharmacy technician. This is mandatory.
  • A recognised ACT/ACPT qualification or accreditation, with evidence of current final accuracy-checking competence. This is mandatory.
  • A recognised pharmacy technician qualification.
  • Relevant pharmacy dispensing experience and a strong understanding of safe dispensing procedures.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organisational skills and the ability to maintain accuracy in a busy environment.
  • Confidence using pharmacy computer systems and maintaining accurate records.
  • Clear communication skills and a professional, patient-focused approach.
  • The ability to recognise the limits of your role and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • A commitment to confidentiality, patient safety and continuing professional development.

Desirable Experience

  • Community pharmacy or distance-selling pharmacy experience.
  • Care-home dispensing, compliance aids and MAR/eMAR systems.
  • Dispensary workflow coordination, staff supervision or mentoring.
  • Experience with Titan, Analyst or other pharmacy management systems.
  • Participation in pharmacy audits, incident reporting and quality improvement.

Overseas Applicants and Visa Sponsorship

We welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates currently living inside or outside the UK.

Skilled Worker visa sponsorship may be available to eligible successful candidates, subject to the role and applicant meeting the applicable Home Office requirements and sponsorship being available.

Current GPhC registration as a pharmacy technician and recognised ACT/ACPT qualification or accreditation remain essential for all applicants, regardless of nationality or location.

An overseas pharmacy qualification or overseas professional registration alone does not satisfy these requirements. This vacancy is for a qualified Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician, rather than a trainee position.

How to Apply

Please submit your CV and a brief supporting statement outlining your relevant experience. Include your:

  • GPhC registration number.
  • ACT/ACPT qualification or accreditation details.
  • Relevant dispensing and accuracy-checking experience.
  • Current location, availability and any visa sponsorship requirements.
