What they need
A Global Studies program of Long Island University seeks part-time adjunct faculty to teach the course: Quantitative Literacy and Global Issues in Strasbourg from 1 February to 30 April, 2027 . The class meets once a week (schedule determined in consultation with selected candidate) and includes field experiences. Students have beginner-level French, so instruction to be delivered in English.
Course description:
This seminar course will introduce students to the art and science of understanding and interpreting numerical results, translating real-world problems into mathematical forms, and critically evaluating the contexts, underpinning assumptions and validity of quantitative data. As part of the seminar, students will deepen their understanding of key global issues by learning to identify, interpret and critically engage with relevant quantitative datasets. Alongside building students: confidence in understanding, incorporating and producing numerical data in their scholarly, professional and personal lives, the course will also critically examine ethnocentric and other universalist assumptions inherent in much quantitative research by engaging with relevant cross-cultural models and decolonial critiques. Upon completion of the course, students will be well-equipped to identify and counter attempts at data manipulation, distortion and deception, thus enhancing the quality of their civic participation and building their capacity for robust and rigorous critical engagement with diverse range of quantitative data.
Preferred requirements:
PhD in related field preferred; Master’s degree required.
University teaching experience, preferably with U.S. college students.
Fluent in English and French, oral and written.
Commitment to program goals and experiential education, including field trip design and participation.
Experience with study abroad or cross-cultural programs.
Strong interpersonal skills and team player.
Creative and dynamic teacher with commitment to student development.
