After School Coding Instructor

Griot Academy has taught chess, coding and robotics to children across DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia for twenty years. We hire a small number of instructors each session and we train every one of them ourselves.

We're looking for people who can hold the attention of a room of eight-year-olds. Our students are Pre-K through 8th grade, and we're hiring coding instructors for the winter session, starting in January.

What you'd do

You take one small group - usually 8 to 12 students - for a full session of 7 to 10 weeks. Classes are one hour and start between 2:30 and 5:00 in the afternoon. Students build games, animations and small apps, and you run the room and keep them engaged. Because it's the same group every week, you watch a child go from dragging blocks around to planning a game out and fixing their own bugs. That's the part our instructors stay for.

What we provide

We give you the curriculum, the software and paid training. There is no lesson planning and no grading. You don't walk in cold and you don't build lessons from scratch.

Who does well here

Camp counselors, youth program staff and coaches. Tutors and mentors. Current and retired teachers, and teachers' aides. College and graduate students, especially computer science, education, STEM and engineering majors. Anyone who codes.

Experience in coding is welcome. If you've written code, built a website, or taught yourself Scratch or Python, tell us what you know and we'll match you to it. Training in our curriculum is provided either way.

What matters is that you enjoy kids, you can hold a room's attention, and you show up.

The details

$60-$90 per class. A class is one hour.

Most instructors start with two or three afternoons a week and add more as they want them. Up to five classes a week is available.

Sessions run 7 to 10 weeks, so you know your days and your schools before the session starts.

We place instructors in schools across Washington DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia, and we match you to a school once we know where you can travel.

Reliable transportation to your assigned school.

One thing we're firm about: when you take a class, you finish the session. Students should see the same instructor every week.
