After School Robotics Instructor

You don't need to be an expert. You need to be good with children - we'll teach you the rest.

Griot Academy has run after-school robotics, coding and chess programs for 20 years, in public and private schools across DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia. Our students are Pre-K through 8th grade. We're hiring robotics instructors for the winter session, starting in January.

What you'd do

You take one small group - usually 8 to 12 students - for a full session of 7 to 10 weeks. Classes are one hour and start between 2:30 and 5:00 in the afternoon. Students build, test and fix things with their hands, and you run the room and keep them engaged. Because it's the same group every week, you watch a child go from following the instructions to figuring out why their build won't work and fixing it themselves. That's the part our instructors stay for.

What we provide

We give you the curriculum, the equipment and paid training. There is no lesson planning and no grading. You don't walk in cold and you don't build lessons from scratch.

You don't need an engineering degree. If you've built things, tinkered, coached a robotics team or taught yourself, tell us what you already know and we'll train you on the rest.

Who does well here

Camp counselors, youth program staff and coaches. Tutors and mentors. Current and retired teachers, and teachers' aides. College and graduate students, especially engineering, STEM and education majors. Robotics team mentors and hobbyists.

What matters is that you enjoy kids, you can hold a room's attention, and you show up.

The details

$60-$90 per class. A class is one hour.

Most instructors start with two or three afternoons a week and add more as they want them. Up to five classes a week is available.

Sessions run 7 to 10 weeks, so you know your days and your schools before the session starts.

We place instructors in schools across Washington DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia, and we match you to a school once we know where you can travel.

Reliable transportation to your assigned school.

One thing we're firm about: when you take a class, you finish the session. Students should see the same instructor every week.
