What they need

Aftercare Program Associate

Charles Armstrong School · Belmont, CA · Limited part-time · Non-exempt · $21.84 per hour

Charles Armstrong School unlocks the unique potential of students with dyslexia and related learning differences, changing the trajectory of their lives.

About Armstrong

Charles Armstrong School is the premier school for children with dyslexia and related learning differences in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a national reputation for excellence. We are a non-profit, independent, coeducational day school of approximately 240 students in grades 1–8, and every part of our program is designed for students who learn differently.

About the Role

Aftercare is where Armstrong students get to exhale after a full day of focused learning. As an Aftercare Program Associate, you'll help make that time safe, joyful, and restorative. You'll also gain hands-on experience with students with learning differences, which makes this an ideal starting point for anyone considering teaching, special education, counseling, or youth development.

Flexible. Choose the days that work for you, as long as your weekly schedule is consistent. Shifts run 2:45–5:30 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 12:30–5:30 pm on Wednesdays.

What You'll Do

  • Build warm, consistent relationships with students and help them feel settled after the school day
  • Use positive teacher language to guide behavior, set clear and kind limits, and help students resolve conflicts
  • Support tired, frustrated, or dysregulated students with patience and calm
  • Supervise students across indoor and outdoor spaces and transitions, following health, safety, and sign-out procedures
  • Lead afternoon activities and snack, and keep spaces organized and supplied
  • Maintain attendance records and document incidents per school policy, as a mandated reporter
  • Share student updates with the Aftercare Program Lead and brief, positive updates with families at pickup

What You'll Learn

  • Responsive Classroom teacher language and limit-setting
  • How dyslexia, ADHD, and anxiety show up in students' social and emotional lives
  • Co-regulation strategies for supporting students through big feelings
  • Trust-building communication with families

How We Support You

  • Monthly team meetings and paid professional development
  • A structured feedback cycle: self-reflection, peer feedback, and a year-end evaluation
  • Room to grow: our Aftercare Program Lead role was developed and filled from within this team

Who We're Looking For

Someone who genuinely enjoys kids, stays steady when things get noisy, and is reliable, because students and families count on familiar faces at the end of the day. We especially welcome candidates with personal or family experience of learning differences.

Required: High school diploma or equivalent; availability for the full school-year schedule; Live Scan, TB clearance, and CPR/First Aid before start

Preferred: One year of experience with elementary- or middle-school-aged children in settings such as aftercare, camps, tutoring, coaching, or classrooms

Benefits

Wellness stipend · Paid sick leave per California law · Paid professional development · A collaborative team of seasoned educators
