This role ensures adherence to DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and applicable federal and state regulations, while actively fostering a culture of safety and accountability among drivers and employees.

This leader partners closely with executive leadership to align safety and risk strategies with broader business objectives—balancing compliance, operational efficiency, and profitability.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Leadership & Compliance

  • Develop, implement, and enforce comprehensive safety policies, procedures, and best practices across fleet operations
  • Ensure full compliance with FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements
  • Lead CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) initiatives to reduce violations and improve safety scores
  • Maintain all required compliance documentation including driver qualification files, drug/alcohol testing records, and vehicle maintenance logs
  • Prepare for, lead, and successfully manage DOT/FMCSA audits

  • Design and deliver impactful safety training programs, including new driver onboarding and ongoing education
  • Conduct regular safety meetings, coaching sessions, and awareness initiatives
  • Promote a proactive safety culture rooted in accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement

Risk Management & Claims Oversight

  • Establish and manage enterprise-wide risk management policies and frameworks
  • Oversee corporate insurance programs including auto liability, general liability, property, and workers’ compensation
  • Lead claims management processes, partnering with insurers, legal counsel, and third-party administrators
  • Analyze accidents and incident trends to develop and deploy targeted prevention strategies

Data, Technology & Continuous Improvement

  • Leverage telematics, dash cams, GPS tracking, and ELD systems to monitor driver behavior and improve safety performance
  • Utilize safety data, compliance metrics, and trend analysis to inform decisions and drive measurable results
  • Stay current on evolving regulations, industry trends, and emerging safety technologies

Strategic Leadership

  • Advise executive leadership on safety risks, mitigation strategies, and regulatory exposure
  • Develop and maintain business continuity and disaster recovery plans
  • Lead response efforts during safety incidents or crisis situations
  • Identify areas for operational improvement that enhance both safety outcomes and business performance
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of company goals

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Transportation, Logistics, or a related field (preferred)
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in transportation safety, fleet management, or regulatory compliance within the trucking/logistics industry
  • Deep expertise in DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and Hazardous Materials regulations
