About the company

Relevant Search is partnering with an AI-native accounting and finance company that runs the back office for insurers, MGAs, and reinsurers. They are not a consulting firm. They replace manual, people-heavy processes with a system that does the work. Their reinsurance engine is already running live treaty contracts.

About the role

You will own the accounting for every reinsurance entity on the platform, from the data model to the reviewed financial statements. You will also decide how the platform’s accounting logic works. At the start, about 60% of your time goes to doing the accounting and 40% to defining and testing rules with engineering. The balance shifts toward rules over time. Every manual step you perform becomes a written rule and test case.

What you’ll do

• Run a shadow close on reinsurance clients alongside the current provider, tie out prior-quarter entries, and take full ownership of the close within your first two quarters
• Own the accounting design of the reinsurance subledger: chart of accounts mapping, journal entry design, and controls, working with engineering
• Be accountable for US Statutory (NAIC SAP) and GAAP (ASC 944) outputs, including Quarterly and Annual Statements, key schedules, and the statutory-to-GAAP bridge
• Act as the final reviewer before anything goes to a client. Write the position memos on complex treatments.
• Run the auditor relationship day to day: PBC lists, walkthroughs, tie-outs, and auditor questions
• Write specs (inputs, logic, expected entries, edge cases) clear enough that engineers can build from them without follow-up questions
• Help hire and develop the accounting team as it grows. This is a hands-on role, not a management one.

What you bring

• 10+ years of accounting at a reinsurer, carrier, intermediary, or Big 4 insurance practice, including controller-level responsibility
• Hands-on treaty reinsurance accounting: assumed and ceded, quota share and stop-loss, funds withheld, retrocession, bordereaux, settlements, and risk-transfer testing
• Strong NAIC SAP and ASC 944 knowledge, including Annual Statement preparation and Schedule F
• Hands-on role in a full ERP implementation or rebuild (NetSuite preferred), and comfort working across more than one GL
• You still do the work yourself. If your team disappeared tomorrow, you could book the entries, read the contract, and close the books.
• You understand why each step in the close exists, not only how it is done

Nice to have

• CPA (deep statutory reinsurance experience counts for more than the credential)
• Puerto Rico, Bermuda, or other non-NAIC regimes
• MGA, program, fronting, or delegated-authority business
• Startup, insurtech, or newly formed insurer experience

Travel and how we work

Travel is part of the job and is not negotiable. It includes client sites in Puerto Rico and other US locations, plus time at the Dallas headquarters, where client workshops and the automation work happen. Some months there is no travel, other months there will be much more. The pace is fast and ownership is high. The company wants people who are excited to change how insurance accounting is done.
