AI-Native Backend Engineer (Core Java), 3-Month Contract

Alation is looking for an AI-Native Backend Engineer with strong Core Java expertise to join urgently on a 3-month contract. You will own business-critical connector components that handle millions of events and data points daily across customers, using AI coding tools as a core part of your daily workflow.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement moderately complex backend features with minimal supervision
• Contribute to system design and architecture discussions
• Own production components, including maintaining connectors, handling customer escalations, fixing security issues and bugs, and building new features end-to-end
• Use AI coding assistants (Claude, GitHub Copilot, Cursor) for scaffolding, writing tests, code review, and debugging
• Evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, security, and standards before merging

Required Qualifications

• 2+ years of hands-on backend software engineering experience
• Strong, current Core Java skills with clear coding fundamentals
• Solid backend engineering fundamentals and experience with scalable systems
• Hands-on database / JDBC integration experience in production
• Demonstrated daily use of AI coding assistants, with the ability to write precise prompts and decompose tasks effectively
• Background in a product company (B2B SaaS or B2C)
• Based in or near Chennai, Bengaluru, or Ahmedabad
• Comfortable with a 3-month contract and able to join immediately

Preferred Qualifications

• Built and deployed AI/LLM-powered features in production (e.g., RAG, LLM-based scoring, AI assistants)
• Python experience
• Exposure to microservices (candidates without it still qualify)

Work Schedule: 5 days a week. Hybrid (Chennai: in office Tuesday and Thursday).
