AI Process Developer Intern – Spring 2027
About the Job
Books-A-Million is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, and operates a family of brands that includes Books-A-Million, 2nd & Charles, Joe Muggs, and Yogurt Mountain. Our Merchandising Planning and Allocations team manages inventory and allocates product to our stores based on store ranks, forecasts, and SKU-level performance. This part-time internship (maximum 20 hours per week) is based at our Birmingham corporate office and runs January 25 – April 23, 2027. Two interns will use AI tools and our new Tableau reporting engine to automate the manual processes behind how we plan and replenish inventory.
- Position: AI Process Developer Intern – Spring 2027
- Department: Merchandising – Planning and Allocations
- Location: Birmingham, AL – Corporate Office
- Position Type: Part-time internship, maximum 20 hours per week
- Pay: $17 per hour
Role Summary
The AI Process Developer Intern will help Merchandising move from legacy manual work to automated, data-driven processes. As the team transitions to Tableau and a Snowflake data warehouse, the intern will identify reporting and procedural tasks that are manual today and build end-to-end automation for them using AI tools such as Claude, along with Tableau. The goal is to free up significant production time for the Planning and Allocations team so they can focus on inventory decisions. This role works like a data analyst with an AI focus, in a hands-on, collaborative environment where interns contribute real tools the team will use.
Role Responsibilities
Process Automation
- Build end-to-end automation for 3–5 Merchandising processes identified before the program starts.
- Create automation in reporting, inventory replenishment, and store group maintenance processes.
- Use AI tools such as Claude, along with Tableau, to replace manual steps and reduce redundancies in legacy processes.
Reporting & Analysis
- Develop new tools to evaluate merchandise inventory planning, evaluation, and replenishment models.
- Work with large data sets, including data from our Snowflake data warehouse, to support reporting and analysis.
- Build and refine reports in Tableau, our new reporting engine.
Collaboration & Documentation
- Partner with the Planning and Allocations team to understand current processes and confirm automated outputs meet their needs.
- Document each automated process so the team can maintain and use it after the internship.
- Present results and time savings to Merchandising leadership in a capstone presentation at the end of the program.
- Other duties as assigned.
Role Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Rising junior or rising senior pursuing a degree in business, such as Finance, Business, or Business Operations.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Experience managing and working with large data sets.
- Proficiency in Excel.
- Experience using AI tools such as Claude or ChatGPT.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced AI skills, such as building prompts, workflows, or automations with AI tools.
- Familiarity with Tableau, Snowflake, or other reporting and data tools.
- Interest in retail, merchandising, or inventory planning.
Work Environment & Expectations
- Program Length: January 25 – April 23, 2027.
- Schedule: Part-time, maximum 20 hours per week, at the Birmingham corporate office.
- Mentorship: Guidance from the Director of Merchandise Planning and the SVP of Merchandising.
- Capstone: A final presentation of the automated processes built during the program and the time they save the team.
- Physical Requirements: Must be able to sit at a computer or desk for extended periods and use a keyboard; must be able to communicate using speech, sight, and sound with or without an assistive device.
