Setting: Behavioral Health / Mental Health & Substance Use Treatment (PHP/IOP)

Job Overview

We are seeking a motivated, compassionate, and detail-oriented Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) to join our clinical team. The ideal candidate will have experience facilitating mental health and substance use recovery groups, assisting with clinical documentation, and working within a multidisciplinary behavioral health treatment setting.

This position primarily focuses on facilitating therapeutic and psychoeducational groups, supporting clinical documentation, and maintaining accurate client records using the KIPU Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with KIPU, understand clinical documentation requirements, and demonstrate strong organizational and communication skills. This paid position provides an excellent opportunity for an AMFT to gain supervised clinical experience while contributing to quality client care in a supportive treatment environment.

Key Responsibilities

Group Facilitation

  • Facilitate mental health, behavioral health, and substance use recovery groups in PHP and IOP settings under appropriate clinical supervision.
  • Utilize evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and psychoeducation.
  • Develop structured group topics, lesson plans, and therapeutic activities that align with individualized treatment goals.
  • Encourage client participation while maintaining a safe, professional, and supportive therapeutic environment.
  • Address topics including emotional regulation, coping skills, relapse prevention, trauma, anxiety, depression, and interpersonal relationships.

Clinical Documentation & KIPU EHR

  • Assist with completing, reviewing, and maintaining accurate clinical documentation within the KIPU EHR system.
  • Complete timely and detailed group progress notes, including DAP-format documentation when required.
  • Support the clinical team with biopsychosocial assessments, individualized treatment plans, treatment plan updates, progress notes, and other clinical documentation within the AMFT's scope of practice and under appropriate supervision.
  • Ensure documentation meets organizational policies, HIPAA requirements, and applicable regulatory and clinical standards.
  • Assist with monitoring documentation completeness, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Director and treatment team to address documentation deficiencies and maintain audit readiness.

Clinical Support & Collaboration

  • Participate in clinical team meetings, case consultations, and treatment planning discussions.
  • Assist with client assessments, therapeutic interventions, and individual sessions as assigned and clinically appropriate.
  • Support clients with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Communicate relevant client progress, clinical concerns, and treatment barriers to the supervising clinician.
  • Follow established crisis intervention and safety protocols, seeking supervisory assistance when necessary.
  • Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical standards.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, Counseling, Psychology, or a closely related field that meets California BBS requirements.
  • Current Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) registration with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS).
  • Experience or training in facilitating therapeutic or psychoeducational groups.
  • Strong clinical writing skills and knowledge of behavioral health documentation standards.
  • Understanding of DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria and evidence-based therapeutic interventions.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations, client confidentiality, and professional ethics.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet clinical documentation deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with therapists, case managers, medical providers, and clinical leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using KIPU EHR is strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience working in Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), residential treatment, or substance use treatment facilities.
  • Experience completing group notes, DAP notes, biopsychosocial assessments, and individualized treatment plans.
  • Familiarity with clinical documentation audits, medical necessity, and insurance documentation requirements.
  • Experience treating clients with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care, CBT, DBT, and relapse prevention interventions.

What We Offer

  • Paid clinical position within a collaborative behavioral health treatment environment.
  • Opportunities to develop clinical skills through group facilitation, assessments, and documentation.
  • Clinical supervision consistent with California BBS requirements.
  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary clinical treatment team.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and advancement within behavioral health services.

Ideal Candidate

We are specifically seeking an AMFT who is comfortable leading therapeutic groups and assisting with clinical documentation using KIPU. The ideal candidate is organized, dependable, clinically knowledgeable, and capable of maintaining high-quality documentation while providing compassionate, client-centered care.
