JOIN OUR TEAM

The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) works to make energy consumers better off, now and in the future. We focus on ensuring a secure, reliable and affordable energy future for Australia as it transitions to net zero emissions.

We regulate electricity networks and covered gas pipelines, in all jurisdictions except Western Australia. We set the amount of revenue that network businesses can recover from customers for using these networks.

From 1 July 2026, the AER structurally separated from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and transitioned into a standalone non-corporate Commonwealth entity with its own accountable authority, staff and budgetary control.

The separation of the AER from the ACCC is a significant regulatory reform aimed at improving the governance and operational autonomy of the AER and is an exciting time to join us and help shape our new agency.

THE OPPORTUNITY

As an Analyst, you will report to a Assistant Director and operate with limited direction in a fast-paced and collaborative environment. In this role you will contribute to the achievement of the AER’s purpose: to make all energy consumers better off, now and in the future.

DMO work can be fast-paced with short deadlines. Successful applicants will be confident engaging with colleagues, able to quickly understand priorities and progress work efficiently, and comfortable using their judgement to act on instructions without unnecessary delay.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Work flexibly and collaboratively across geographically dispersed DMO teams, building constructive relationships and contributing to team discussions, problem solving and the efficient delivery of work.
  • Collect and analyse data and energy market information to develop insights, identify trends and support regulatory processes that respond to the changing energy market while minimising regulatory burden.
  • Communicate complex or technical information clearly and professionally, tailoring written and verbal communication for diverse audiences and supporting consultation and stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Demonstrate initiative, sound judgement and responsiveness by managing competing priorities, delivering accurate work within agreed timeframes, improving workflows and upholding the APS Values, Employment Principles and AER behaviours.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We invite applications from people with the following experience, skills and attributes:

  • Demonstrate a well-developed understanding, or the ability to quickly acquire an understanding, of the Australian energy sector and the AER’s role, purpose and strategic objectives.
  • Undertake objective and systematic analysis, using tools such as Power BI, Excel or R to interpret data, draw evidence-based conclusions and communicate findings persuasively.
  • Interpret and apply legislation, policies, procedures and guidance material, exercising initiative and delivering quality outcomes within agreed timeframes.
  • Communicate clearly and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, building positive relationships and demonstrating integrity and accountability consistent with APS Values, Employment Principles and AER behaviours.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Australian Citizenship – our successful candidate must be an Australian Citizen
  • Security clearance – our successful candidate is required to hold, or have the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the required level
  • Employment check – your suitability for employment will be assessed through a screening process.

HOW TO APPLY

Please upload your resume (maximum 2 pages) and upload a 800 word statement of claims. When preparing your statement of claims, please consider the role, duties, and responsibilities outlined above when highlighting your relevant experience that demonstrates how you meet the selection criteria.

To assist you in completing your application, we recommend you review the Candidate Information Kit and Applying for Jobs at the AER Guide available under ‘Job Attachments’.

For further information about the role, please contact Patrick Vagg on 03 9910 9530 Applications close at 11:30pm, Sunday, 1 November 2026 (AEDT). To learn more about working at the AER, please visit https://www.aer.gov.au/about/careers/working-aer Energise your career with us!
