Android Developer – Kotlin & Jetpack Compose (3–7 years)

🚀 We’re hiring: Android Developers — Mid to Senior Level

Kotlin | Jetpack Compose | 3–7 years of experience

Balstern Digital is growing its Android engineering team for a long-term European railway digitalisation project.

You’ll help build a new Android application that supports train drivers with journey information and real-time driving advice. Working alongside our Android Lead and European partner engineering teams, you’ll develop an application where reliability, clear interfaces and robust offline behaviour matter.

📍 Location: India | Hybrid / Remote

💼 Employment: Full-time with Balstern Digital

📅 Initial project engagement: Approximately 18–24 months, with potential extension and opportunities on future projects.

What you’ll do

• Write, test, debug and maintain production Android code using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.

• Build responsive tablet interfaces from Figma designs, with reusable components and adaptive layouts.

• Implement predictable UI state, navigation and lifecycle-aware behaviour using ViewModel, Coroutines and Flow/StateFlow.

• Develop local persistence, caching, offline functionality, reconnection and recovery flows.

• Integrate backend services and partner components, including real-time communication and authentication.

• Contribute to modular architecture, technical discussions and peer code reviews.

• Write unit and UI tests, investigate crashes and performance issues, and support CI/CD and release delivery.

• Collaborate with the Android Lead, UX designers, QA and European engineering teams.

What we’re looking for

- 3–7 years of professional Android development experience , with strong hands-on Kotlin skills.

• Practical Jetpack Compose experience, including state management, recomposition, side effects and reusable UI components.

• Good understanding of the Android lifecycle, configuration changes, process death and state restoration.

• Experience with Coroutines, structured concurrency, Flow/StateFlow, cancellation and asynchronous error handling.

• Working knowledge of MVVM or MVI, Clean Architecture principles and modularisation.

• Experience with dependency injection using Hilt or Koin.

• Experience integrating REST APIs with Retrofit/OkHttp and implementing local storage using Room or DataStore.

• Ability to write meaningful automated tests using JUnit, MockK, Espresso or Compose UI testing.

• Confidence investigating crashes, memory leaks and UI performance problems.

• Familiarity with Git, code reviews and automated build pipelines.

• Clear communication, collaborative working habits and ownership of implementation quality.

Nice to have

- Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) or Compose Multiplatform (CMP) experience, particularly sharing business logic or UI across platforms.

• MQTT, WebSocket or other real-time messaging experience.

• XML/XSD-based integrations.

• Microsoft Entra ID/MSAL, OAuth/OIDC and secure token handling.

• Android Keystore and secure local storage.

• GNSS/location services or applications operating under unreliable connectivity.

• Enterprise device management, managed configuration or kiosk applications.

• Experience in railway, transport, automotive or other operational applications.
