Animal Behavior Assistant

Schedule: Part-time

Location: Lahaska

The Animal Behavior Assistant is an ideal entry level position for someone with a strong interest in animal behavior and training using science-based methods. You’ll gain hands-on experience in enrichment while working closely with our Director of Animal Behavior. In addition to working with a broad range of animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, and other small animals, responsibilities include cleaning and preparing training areas and enrichment tools. You will interact with the public, volunteers, and shelter staff, and must be able to do so in a positive and professional manner. Opening at the Lahaska Shelter. Some evening and weekend hours required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Handles animals safely, humanely, and with compassion.
• Prepares and delivers animal enrichment treats and tools according to shelter guidelines
• Responsible for cleaning training rooms and equipment.
• Assists with animal care and implementation of training programs.
• Helps facilitate public group training classes.
• Monitors animal well-being, identifying and reporting any medical or behavioral problems to the appropriate staff
• Communicates regularly and directly with Director of Animal Behavior in person and by sharing video, notes, and observations on a consistent basis
• May assist with animal behavior evaluations
• Supports behavior and training programs by communicating instructions and information to staff and volunteers in a clear and positive manner

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred
• Valid driver’s license and a good driving record
• Minimum 1-year experience working or volunteering in animal health care or welfare required
• Comfort with and ability to work with animals of unknown disposition and/or aggressive tendencies
• Knowledge of positive reinforcement training with dogs and cats preferred
• Excellent customer service, communications skills, and note taking skills
• Ability to take direction and work positively in a team environment
• Mid-level computer skills and ability to use cell phone video to share and document animal behavior
• Physical requirements include ability to talk, hear, see, sit, stand, walk and regularly lift and move up to 60 lbs.
