API 653 Tank Inspector - Level 1

Job Overview

The API 653 Tank Inspector is responsible for inspecting and evaluating all types of aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) to ensure mechanical integrity, code compliance, and safe operation. This includes internal and external inspections of the tank shell, welds, appurtenances, fixed roof, floating roofs, vertical, horizontal, and other configured tanks constructed to API 650, API 620, and other applicable codes. The inspector ensures tanks are maintained in accordance with API 653, regulatory standards, and company policies and reports applicable findings.

Responsibilities & Duties

• Conduct internal and external inspections of ASTs as per API 653.
• Inspect tank components including shell, roofs, bottoms, appurtenances, welds, supports, foundations, containment.
• Evaluate tank corrosion, settlement, foundation condition, and structural & hydraulic integrity.
• Interpret and assess results from non-destructive testing (NDT/NDE) including Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) Scans, Penetrant/Diesel Testing Examination and Visual Examination.
• Review and verify compliance with tank construction standards such as API 650, API 620, ASME, NFPA, STI SP001, and client-specific requirements.
• Support repair, alteration, and reconstruction planning in accordance with API 653 requirements.
• Document inspection findings and issue reports detailing repair recommendations, inspection intervals, and compliance status.
• Conduct floating roof seal inspections, leak detection assessments, and settlement surveys.
• Assist with risk-based inspection (RBI) and integrity management program input for various tank types.
• Ensure all inspection activities meet regulatory compliance (e.g., OSHA, EPA, local, regional, state environmental regulations).

Must Have

• Valid API 653 Certification (Aboveground Storage Tank Inspector) – Mandatory.

• 3–5 years of field experience inspecting various types of ASTs.

• Deep understanding of tank failure modes, corrosion mechanisms, and weld inspection.

• Strong report writing and documentation skills.

• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, tank data sheets, and repair plans.

• Proficient with MS Office and digital inspection tools.

• Excellent communication and teamwork in diverse, field-based environments.

• Safety-first mindset and familiarity with permit systems, confined space, and work-at-height requirements.

• Familiarity with tank inspection tools, methods, and industry practices.

• High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or engineering degree preferred.

Knowledge of:

• API 653 (Above Ground Storage Inspector)

• API 650 (Welded Tanks for Oil Storage)

• API 620 (Design & Construction of Large, Welded, Low-Pressure Tanks)

• API 651 / API 652 (Cathodic protection and lining systems)

• ASME Section IX (Welding Qualifications)- API RP 572, API 571, STI SP001

Nice to Have:

Additional certifications and Experience such as:

• API 510 (Pressure Vessel Inspector)

• API 570 (Piping Inspector)

• AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)

• NACE/AMPP Coatings Inspector Level I/II

• Tank inspection, repairs and retrofits

• Tank cleaning, hydrotesting, and decommissioning

• Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans

• Tank software (inspection reporting, RBI tools, 3D scanning)

Pay: $4,800.00 - $5,800.00 per month
