Application for HOD – General Surgery

JMN Medical College, West Bengal, seeks an accomplished surgeon and academic leader to develop its Department of General Surgery into a centre of excellence in patient care, surgical education, research and ethical practice.

Remuneration: ₹3,00,000 per month | Full-time appointment

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Departmental leadership: Implement a development plan with clear clinical and academic priorities, faculty responsibilities, resource requirements and measurable outcomes.
• Clinical and surgical excellence: Lead OPD, inpatient and operative services; ensure sound surgical indications, evidence-based treatment, consultant rounds and continuity of care.
• Emergency readiness: Establish dependable emergency coverage, timely assessment, consultant escalation and coordination with Anaesthesiology, Critical Care, diagnostics and blood services.
• Surgical safety: Strengthen preoperative assessment, informed consent, surgical checklists, infection prevention, postoperative monitoring and discharge planning.
• Teaching and training: Deliver competency-based education through bedside teaching, operative demonstrations, simulation, case discussions and structured assessments; ensure supervised, graded training for interns and residents.
• Quality improvement: Conduct mortality and morbidity meetings and audit complications, infections, cancellations, readmissions and unplanned reoperations; implement documented corrective actions.
• Faculty and research development: Mentor faculty, promote ethical research and quality publications, and organise continuing education and academic collaborations.
• Service and postgraduate development: Strengthen general and minimally invasive surgical services according to available expertise and facilities; assess postgraduate readiness, subject to institutional and regulatory approval.
• Resources and compliance: Improve theatre coordination, equipment readiness, documentation and responsible resource use; maintain regulatory compliance and respectful patient communication.

ELIGIBILITY

MS in General Surgery or an equivalent recognised qualification, valid medical registration, and eligibility for appointment as HOD and the faculty rank offered under applicable NMC requirements.

Preference will be given to eligible Professors with demonstrated departmental leadership, teaching excellence, surgical expertise and research achievements.
