What they need

Application Systems Engineer (ECM)

Servpro builds and runs the enterprise content and records management systems used across the Singapore public sector. When one of these systems is slow, or a document cannot be retrieved, or an audit trail is questioned, real work stops.

We are a team of around fifty. You will be named on the work you do rather than absorbed into a programme, and you will still be there when it goes live.

Scope of the Role

You will build and run the platform layer. That means installing enterprise content management software onto server infrastructure, integrating it with directory services, databases, storage and the network, and delivering working UAT, QA and production environments that the business can then be configured on.

You build and run the platform; Business Analysts configure business rules on top of it. This is a technical role, not a functional one.

Beyond initial deployment, you keep the platform healthy: deploying modules and customisations, applying security patches and hardening baselines, tuning performance, and diagnosing faults that sit at the boundary between infrastructure and application — the ones that are nobody's obvious responsibility until someone works out where they actually live.

You will report to a Tech Lead, work alongside other Systems Engineers on a project, and engage directly with client infrastructure, security and database teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install and deploy enterprise content management platforms onto Windows Server infrastructure, across UAT, QA and production environments.
  • Integrate the platform with supporting infrastructure — Active Directory or LDAP, single sign-on, database, file and archive storage, load balancers and network paths.
  • Build and hand over environments that are stable, documented and ready for functional configuration.
  • Deploy modules, customisations and interfaces released by the development team, and manage their promotion between environments.
  • Apply security patches and hardening baselines, and keep the platform compliant with government security requirements.
  • Monitor and tune platform performance — application server, database, storage and network — and investigate degradation before users report it.
  • Diagnose faults across the infrastructure and application boundary, establishing root cause rather than applying restarts.
  • Support deployed systems in production, including escalation cover, incident records and root cause analysis.
  • Document environment builds, configurations and known issues to the standard required on government accounts.

What We Are Looking For

We care more about how you diagnose than which product you have used.

  • Three or more years installing, deploying and running enterprise applications on server infrastructure — not only configuring them through a user interface.
  • Solid infrastructure grounding: Windows Server administration, Active Directory or LDAP, DNS, certificates, firewalls and ports, and SQL Server fundamentals.
  • Experience with application server or middleware layers such as IIS, Tomcat or JBoss, including deployment and troubleshooting.
  • Scripting for deployment, automation and verification — PowerShell primarily.
  • Practical experience of security patching and hardening in a production environment.
  • Evidence that you have diagnosed hard production problems yourself, particularly ones where the cause sat between layers. You should be able to explain what happens between a user clicking a document link and the file appearing on their screen.
  • A diploma or degree in Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field.

Advantageous, Not Required

  • Deployment experience on an ECM, records or workflow platform — OpenText, NewgenONE, SharePoint, Documentum, Alfresco, or comparable
  • Performance tuning or capacity work on a large document repository
  • Migration or version upgrade projects, including large-scale document migration
  • Cloud platform experience — Azure, AWS, or Government Commercial Cloud (GCC)
  • Exposure to IM8 or Whole-of-Government security standards
  • Prior on-call or P1 incident experience
  • Vendor certifications in OpenText, Microsoft, cloud or networking

Who This Suits

This role suits someone methodical: a person who reads an error message properly rather than skimming it, changes one thing at a time, and considers what a change might affect before making it on a production system. Someone who would rather understand a fault than simply close a ticket.

If your background is configuring business rules inside an application and escalating anything technical, this will be a stretch. If you are the person who gets called when an application is up but not working, and nobody can say why, this is the role.

What You Get

  • Ownership of the platform layer on systems operating at national scale, where reliability is not negotiable.
  • Visibility — in a fifty-person firm you are named on the work, and you present it.
  • Structured progression, with skills assessed against a defined proficiency framework rather than by impression, and a clear path toward Tech Lead.
  • Breadth across the full stack and across multiple client systems, rather than one narrow slice of one programme.

How We Hire

Our process assesses how you diagnose problems, not how well you rehearse answers. You will work through real scenarios rather than recite product features.

  • Stage 1 — CV review and one short written question.
  • Stage 2 — Diagnostic conversation with a Tech Lead, about 75 minutes. We give you the symptom; you ask the questions.
  • Stage 3 — Practical exercise, 45 to 60 minutes, thinking aloud. We are not looking for a fix, but for your reasoning.
  • Stage 4 — Final conversation with the Managing Director, about 45 minutes.

We will tell you where you stand after each stage, whichever way it goes.

To Apply

Send your CV along with a short answer to this question — no more than 200 words:

"Describe the hardest production problem you personally diagnosed. What was the symptom, what did you think it was initially, and what did it actually turn out to be?"

We read that answer carefully. It tells us more than a cover letter does.

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Government project work may require security clearance.

Other offers great for you!
