What they need

Start your career with Nissan

Are you mechanically minded, hands-on, and hungry to build something real? Nissan Casting Australia is on the lookout for a driven and curious Apprentice Mechanical Maintenance Technician (Mechanical Fitter) to join our forward-thinking Maintenance team in Dandenong South.

This is a four-year apprenticeship that blends structured on-the-job training with formal TAFE study, giving you the best of both worlds. You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with seasoned, qualified Tradespersons, building the practical skills and technical know-how to maintain, repair, and optimise cutting-edge manufacturing plant machinery, all while earning a nationally recognised trade qualification.

What you'll be doing

As a key member of our Maintenance team, you'll dive into a diverse range of hands-on mechanical activities, including:

  • Assisting with planned preventative maintenance on casting machines and automated cells
  • Learning to troubleshoot and repair mechanical faults to keep the factory firing at full speed
  • Assisting with the alignment and maintenance of pumps, couplings, and gearboxes
  • Replacing and maintaining components such as bearings, seals, chains, and belts
  • Learning to operate workshop machinery, including lathes, mills, and drills
  • Manufacturing and modifying components directly from engineering drawings
  • Developing foundational manual arc, MIG, and TIG welding skills for minor fabrication work
  • Following site safety requirements, including JSAs and lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedures
  • Maintaining a clean, organised, and safe workplace in line with 5S practices
  • Attending scheduled TAFE classes, completing coursework, and keeping your practical training logbook up to date

What we're looking for

We want someone who is genuinely passionate about becoming a Mechanical Fitter and is ready to soak up knowledge from an experienced, supportive team. The ideal candidate will bring:

  • A minimum of Year 10 completion, with Year 12 preferred
  • A Certificate II in Engineering (Pre-Apprenticeship) is highly regarded
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and a natural curiosity about how machinery works
  • Solid basic mathematical and problem-solving skills
  • Great verbal communication skills and the confidence to speak up when you need clarity
  • A reliable, punctual, and consistent approach to showing up and getting things done
  • A genuine willingness to listen, learn, and follow instructions
  • A positive, collaborative attitude and the ability to thrive within a multicultural team
  • A respectful and patient approach when working with colleagues and internal customers
  • A strong commitment to workplace safety and 5S practices

What you need to know

This is a dynamic, physical role set within a fast-paced manufacturing environment. You'll need to be comfortable with hands-on work including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods, as well as operating confidently within a busy industrial setting.

You'll also need to be available to work either day or afternoon shift depending on business requirements.

Why Nissan Casting Australia?

This isn't just a job, it's a launchpad. Our apprenticeship program lets you earn while you learn, combining real-world manufacturing experience with formal study that sets you up for a long and rewarding trade career.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll gain invaluable exposure to:

  • Mechanical maintenance across complex manufacturing equipment
  • Precision machining and fabrication techniques
  • Fault finding and diagnostic problem-solving
  • Automated manufacturing equipment and emerging technologies

Backed by qualified Tradespersons who are invested in your growth, you'll never navigate your development alone. If you're reliable, curious, mechanically minded, and ready to start building your trade career, we'd love to hear from you**.**
