Apprentice Sheet Metal Worker

You will gain a vocational qualification in Cladding Occupations (Roof Sheeting & Wall Cladding) while gaining industry experience supporting our qualified Roofing or Cladding installers to complete projects. You’ll do this by setting up work areas, moving equipment, carrying out manual work, measuring and preparing materials and ensuring the site is safe and organised.

You will work under supervision to develop skills in measuring, cutting, shaping, fixing and troubleshooting various sheet metal roofing materials in line with project specifications and quality standards.

You’ll need physical strength, accuracy, a good understanding of construction environments and a willingness to learn new skills within the roofing and cladding trade.

What will I do?

Ø Safety, Health and Environment – Take responsibility for your own health, safety, adhering to policies, procedures and risk assessments (RAMS) and escalating any concerns to a manager or senior manager. You’ll develop knowledge of the building and construction industries and learn how to climb to heights and conduct work while properly using safety restraints.

Ø Work area preparation – You’ll learn how to interpret information such as plans, drawings and risk assessments (RAMS) and set up controlled working areas. You will act upon RAMS instructions, help unload materials, set up key items required for the Daily Tasks and tidy away any waste as the job progresses. Pay strong attention to detail to ensure materials and work areas are managed correctly

Ø Material preparation –You’ll prepare roof sheeting, cladding materials and accessories ready for installation for the whole team.

Ø Learning & development – Work with the senior members within the team to inspect roof, cladding and rainwater goods for defects and together determine the best repair solution.

Ø Repairs & maintenance – On instruction from the team supervisors, carry out small repairs and maintenance to the roofing, cladding and rainwater goods by operating basic hand and power tools safely under supervision.

Ø Communication – Provide excellent service to your team, to the main contractor and client and maintain a good relationship as a priority.

Ø Measuring – Utilise your literacy and numeracy skills to take measurements when required. You’ll also select the right quantity and quality of materials needed for construction operations.

Ø Manual handling – Carry materials, tools and equipment safely. Assist with the movement of panels and fixings and provide general maintenance of installation equipment.

Ø Installation – You will apply roof sheeting and cladding and rainwater goods to structural fabric under supervision. You will also understand and apply building methods and construction technology learned through your theory training.

What experience, knowledge and qualifications will I need to apply?

Essential

· CSCS Trainee or Apprentice Card | CITB HS&E Specialist Working at Height Touchscreen Test | one day site safety training

Desirable

· CSCS Operatives Card

· Working towards an NVQ Level 2 in Cladding Occupations

· Safety Harness & Lanyard with Man-Safe System Training

· Any construction related training such as manual handling, abrasive tools

· ½ day Working at Height safety training

· Basic knowledge of tools and equipment

Experience

· Previous experience as a Labourer or experience in a related field is preferred, but the ability to train is readily available on site.

· Ability to use hand tools and follow safe working practices.

· Understanding of site safety and manual handling techniques.
