Oxbow Machine Products is a family-owned Tier 1 automotive tooling supplier that has operated since 1957. We design, manufacture, assemble and install custom lift assists, secure tooling, assembly fixtures and related equipment for automotive assembly plants.

Position Summary

The apprentice will work alongside experienced toolmakers to learn how to inspect, assemble, adjust and troubleshoot custom automotive tooling and fixtures.

Previous toolmaking experience is not required. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, dependable and willing to learn.

Responsibilities

• Learn to read mechanical drawings, bills of material and build documentation.
• Gather and inspect machined, welded and purchased components.
• Assist with fitting and assembling custom tooling and fixtures.
• Drill, tap, grind, deburr, paint and modify components as directed.
• Install cylinders, clamps, bearings, rails, handles and other components.
• Learn to use calipers, micrometers and other measuring equipment.
• Verify dimensions, alignment, fit and clearances.
• Identify and report missing, damaged or nonconforming components.
• Assist with fixture adjustments, runoff and troubleshooting.
• Maintain a clean work area and follow all safety procedures.
• Occasionally assist with installation or service work at customer facilities.

Qualifications

• Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in hands-on work.
• Dependable attendance and a willingness to learn.
• Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
• Basic understanding of measurements, fractions and shop mathematics.
• Ability to safely use or learn to use hand and power tools.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.

Experience in manufacturing, machining, fabrication, automotive repair or mechanical assembly is helpful but not required. Technical-school or shop-class experience is also beneficial.

Work Environment

This position is based at Oxbow’s manufacturing facility in Livonia, Michigan. The work involves standing, bending, lifting and performing hands-on assembly around industrial equipment. Overtime is available and will be expected during hot orders.
