What they need

The First Nations Health and Welfare Group provides leadership, both internally and externally to the AIHW, as well as analysis and reporting of information and statistics about the health and welfare of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Regional Insights Unit is responsible for a range of data projects about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

The work in the unit includes ongoing updates and enhancements to the Regional Insights for Indigenous Communities website and the Urban Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Equity Dashboards, undertaking Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander life expectancy estimates using linked data, and partnering with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and stakeholders to develop regional and community data profiles.

Under general direction you will:

  • Work with complex datasets, including linked administrative data, to undertake data extraction, analysis, modelling and reporting that inform policy, research and decision-making.
  • Undertake statistical analyses and apply advanced analytical techniques, including Bayesian modelling, to generate robust insights from large and complex data sources.
  • Collaborate with external expert advisors and communicate with advisory group members to develop, refine and validate methodologies, and to support the interpretation and communication of analytical findings.
  • Develop data visualisations, reports and other analytical products, and communicate technical findings clearly and effectively to a range of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Respond to stakeholder information requests and build productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage competing priorities and contributing to multiple projects in a dynamic, collaborative team environment.

This is an identified position. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural knowledge, lived experience, networks and the ability to work effectively with First Nations peoples, organisations and communities are genuine occupational requirements of these role.
