What they need
About NueState
NueState is a design-led development and hospitality group based in Bali, with an ambition to create some of the most distinctive residential and hospitality projects in the region.
We believe the best places are conceived as complete experiences — where architecture, interiors, landscape, materiality, light, furniture, art and nature all contribute to the same idea.
We're inspired by the opportunity to create a new kind of tropical design language: one that feels contemporary and internationally relevant, while remaining deeply connected to Bali, its climate, materials, craftsmanship and culture.
We're not interested in reproducing what's already been done.
We want to experiment. Challenge conventions. Explore new materials and ideas. Work with incredible craftspeople. Obsess over details. And ultimately create projects that are recognised not only because they're beautiful, but because they have a clear point of view.
Our ambition is to build an award-winning design and development studio and a body of work that our team can look back on and feel genuinely proud to have created.
That's why we're looking for another designer to join us.
Someone who doesn't want to spend the next few years simply drawing what they're told.
Someone who wants to contribute ideas, develop their own creative voice, work across architecture and interiors, and help shape projects from the first sketch through to the finished space.
If you're deeply curious about design, have exceptional taste and want to surround yourself with people who care about creating remarkable work, we think you'll feel at home here.
The Role
As an Architectural & Interior Designer, you'll work across the development of NueState's villas, hospitality spaces and future projects — from early concepts through to detailed design and execution.
Rather than specialising exclusively in architecture or interiors, you'll think about the project holistically.
You might spend one day developing the spatial arrangement and architectural language of a villa, and the next refining its material palette, joinery, lighting or furniture.
We're not necessarily looking for someone who is equally experienced in both disciplines. We're looking for someone who understands how they influence each other, and is comfortable moving between architectural and interior thinking as the project develops.
You'll work alongside our architecture, interiors, visualisation, procurement and construction teams to help turn ideas into spaces that are beautiful, functional, buildable and distinctly NueState.
This is a hands-on design role.
We're looking for someone early enough in their career to still be hungry to learn, but experienced enough to contribute meaningful ideas and independently develop design work.
What You'll Do
Concept & Spatial Design
- Interpret complex project narratives and design concepts, and translate them into a coherent architectural and interior language.
- Develop moodboards, references, sketches and concept presentations.
- Explore how architecture, interiors, landscape and materiality can work together as one experience.
- Contribute original ideas rather than simply executing an established direction.
Architecture
- Develop plans, elevations and architectural design details alongside the wider design team.
- Refine building forms, façades, openings, proportions and spatial relationships.
- Consider natural light, ventilation, views, privacy and tropical-climate conditions within the design.
- Support the development of architectural drawing packages and documentation.
- Work with technical team members to ensure design ideas can be translated into buildable solutions.
Interiors
- Develop interior layouts, material palettes, finishes, lighting concepts and joinery.
- Select and develop furniture, fixtures and design details appropriate to each project.
- Consider the relationship between architecture, furniture, art, objects and styling.
- Work with procurement and suppliers to identify materials, finishes and locally made pieces.
- Help maintain consistency between the original concept and the finished space.
Design Development & Collaboration
- Develop concepts through feedback, iteration and increasingly detailed design.
- Collaborate with architects, interior designers, visualisation artists, procurement and construction teams.
- Participate in design reviews and contribute ideas openly.
- Prepare clear presentations and communicate design thinking visually.
- Visit sites where required to understand construction progress and help protect design intent.
- Research materials, products, references and new design ideas.
What We're Looking For
Design Background
A degree or relevant qualification in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Interior Design or a related design discipline.
Ideally around 3–4+ years of professional experience, with meaningful exposure to both architecture and interiors.
We're flexible on years of experience. The quality of your portfolio and the way you think about design matter more to us than the number of years on your CV.
Exceptional Design Sensibility
This is particularly important to us. You have a naturally strong eye for:
- Proportion
- Materiality
- Composition
- Colour
- Furniture
- Lighting
- Spatial experience
- Architecture
- Interiors
- Detail
You understand the difference between something being technically resolved and something being beautifully designed.
1. Holistic Thinking
You don't see architecture and interiors as completely separate disciplines.
You think about the entire experience of a place — from approaching the building and moving through it to touching materials, sitting in furniture and experiencing light throughout the day.
2. Creative Curiosity
- You're interested in design beyond your immediate job.
- You follow architects and designers.
- You save references.
- You visit interesting places.
- You notice materials.
- You're curious about art, furniture, hospitality, fashion and culture.
- You have your own taste — and you're continuing to develop it.
3. Technical Capability
You should be comfortable working with a combination of industry-standard tools such as:
- AutoCAD
- SketchUp
- Adobe Creative Suite
- Rendering / visualisation tools
- Presentation and design software
Comfortable exploring and integrating AI tools into the design workflow is highly desirable. We value designers who use technology to improve the speed and quality of their work while retaining strong design judgement.
Experience with Revit or other BIM software is valuable but not essential.
We're not expecting you to know everything.
We are expecting you to be capable, curious and eager to learn.
The Kind of Designer Who Will Thrive Here
You'll probably enjoy this role if:
- You don't want to be boxed into only architecture or only interiors.
- You care as much about the chair as you do the room it sits in.
- You have strong opinions about design but remain open to feedback.
- You enjoy exploring references and developing ideas.
- You're excited by ambitious projects and high creative standards.
- You notice details other people miss.
- You're comfortable iterating until something feels right.
- You take ownership of your work.
- You want to learn from people across different design disciplines.
- You want to see the things you design actually get built.
What We Offer
- The opportunity to work across both architecture and interiors rather than being confined to one discipline.
- Hands-on involvement in real projects from concept through construction.
- Exposure to residential, hospitality and wellness design.
- Creative freedom within a strong and evolving design identity.
- Collaboration with architects, designers, visualisation artists, procurement and construction teams.
- Opportunities to work with Bali's incredible network of craftspeople, makers and material suppliers.
- A high-performance environment where talented designers can develop quickly.
- The opportunity to help create projects we believe can become recognised for exceptional design.
How to Apply
Please submit your CV and portfolio.
Your portfolio is particularly important to us. Please provide the full portfolio link directly.
We'd love to see work demonstrating both architectural and interior thinking, including concept development, spatial design, materiality and completed or developed projects.
We're interested not only in the finished images, but in understanding how you think as a designer.
The first stage of the recruitment process is to complete our Google Form application. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to an interview and may be asked to complete a short design assessment.
