What they need

About us

The Armory Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving youth by promoting fitness and education through a broad range of athletic, educational, and community programs.

Job Summary

The Armory is home to the fastest indoor track in the world. Each track meet and event is unique, and our Guides are directly responsible for the hospitality, safety, and well-being of spectators, athletes, coaches, officials, and other guests.

As a Captain, you will serve as a working supervisor and leader for the Guide team. Captains lead Guides in completing their assignments and ensure event operations run smoothly, safely, and efficiently. Captains provide guidance and leadership in a manager's absence while supporting Managers and event leadership throughout each assignment.

Captains serve as a primary point of contact for Guides, guests, and event staff. They help coordinate event assignments, manage guest services, maintain crowd flows, communicate facility policies and standard operating procedures, and promptly escalate questions or concerns to management.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Supervise, support, and lead Guides during track meets, athletic events, and other programs.
  • Conduct or assist with Guide check-in, briefings, assignments, and post-event wrap-up.
  • Distribute and manage Guide breaks in a fair and timely manner while maintaining adequate coverage at all posts.
  • Prepare, organize, distribute, and collect wristbands, credentials, radios, keys, uniforms, and other event materials.
  • Ensure Guides are properly credentialed and assigned to the appropriate areas before the event begins.
  • Monitor Guide posts and confirm that assigned duties are being performed properly.
  • Provide coaching, direction, and real-time feedback to Guides.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures, including securing work areas and returning equipment and credentials.
  • Help manage entrances, exits, concourses, seating areas, athlete areas, hospitality areas, and other assigned locations.
  • Support crowd flow and help maintain safe, orderly movement throughout the facility.
  • Enforce The Armory’s facility policies, event procedures, and standard operating procedures.
  • Respond professionally to guest questions, requests, and concerns, providing accurate information or directing matters to the appropriate department.
  • Address minor issues promptly and escalate safety, security, medical, operational, or customer-service concerns to a manager or appropriate supervisor.
  • Communicate event updates, changes, and operational concerns clearly to Guides and leadership.
  • Assist with emergency procedures, evacuations, lost-and-found matters, and other incidents as directed.
  • Maintain professional communication and represent The Armory in a welcoming, respectful, and service-oriented manner.
  • Complete incident reports, staffing notes, credential counts, and other documentation when required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Managers or event leadership.

Ideal Candidate

  • Previous experience in hospitality, guest services, event operations, security, athletics, recreation, or a related field.
  • Prior supervisory, lead, or team-coordination experience preferred.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to give clear direction and maintain professionalism in a busy environment.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to remain calm during unexpected situations.
  • A commitment to safety, excellent customer service, and teamwork.
  • Familiarity with facility policies, emergency procedures, and standard operating procedures, or the ability to learn them quickly.
  • Reliability, punctuality, flexibility, and a willingness to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended event hours.
  • The ability to stand, walk, and remain active for extended periods.
  • The ability to work effectively with athletes, coaches, officials, guests, staff, volunteers, and Guides from diverse backgrounds.
  • A positive, respectful, and inclusive attitude consistent with The Armory Foundation’s mission.
  • Valid NYS Security Guard license (not required)
  • Willing to undergo and pass background check

Position Expectations

Captains are expected to lead by example, remain visible and accessible to the Guide team, and help create a safe, welcoming, and well-organized experience for everyone visiting The Armory.
