What they need

About Cleverbit Software

At Cleverbit Software, we build technology that matters – for real clients, with real impact. Our remote-first, flexible culture supports curious minds, collaborative spirits, and people who care deeply about the work they do.

We believe the best results come from small, focused teams empowered to think independently, work flexibly, and grow continuously.

The Role

We're looking for an Applied AI Engineer to join our team and help shape how we – and our clients – build software with AI.

You'll split your time between three things: researching and testing new AI tools and models, building AI-powered internal products from prototype through to production, and helping client teams adopt agentic software delivery through hands-on builds and workshops.

This is a hands-on engineering role with a strong client-facing side. You'll own work from start to finish, move quickly against client and internal roadmap deadlines, and be comfortable reworking things as the tools evolve.

Employment / Contract Structure & Exclusivity Clause

  • This is a full-time role – 40 hours per week.
  • This is a remote first role (even if based in Malta/Gozo).
  • The exact contract duration will be confirmed during the recruitment process.
  • We are looking for someone who can start as soon as possible.

Exclusivity Clause: This role requires full professional dedication. Parallel client/project work is not permitted unless otherwise approved in writing by the company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and test new AI tools, models and ways of working, and turn what proves useful into practical guidance for our teams.
  • Design and build AI-powered internal products from early prototype through to production, including the infrastructure, deployment and ongoing improvement based on user feedback.
  • Build harnesses and AI solutions for clients against their own codebases, data and systems.
  • Help client teams adopt agentic software delivery through workshops and hands-on support, adapting the approach to how each team works.
  • Provide technical depth in client and presales conversations, and contribute to the documents and proposals that follow.
  • Represent Cleverbit externally through webinars, talks and demos.

Mandatory Requirements (What We're Looking For)

  • A solid software engineering background, with at least 3 years building and shipping production software.
  • Hands-on experience building with LLMs beyond simple chat use – for example agents, tool use, retrieval or evaluations.
  • Daily, practical use of AI coding agents in your own development work, with a clear view of where they help and where they fall down.
  • Comfortable owning something end-to-end, from prototype through deployment and running it in production.
  • Able to understand an unfamiliar codebase or system quickly.
  • Able to explain technical ideas clearly to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders, in conversation and in writing.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Nice to Have

  • Cloud and DevOps experience, such as CI/CD and infrastructure as code.
  • Experience running workshops or coaching other developers.
  • Public speaking or content creation.
  • Consultancy or client-facing delivery experience.

Behavioural / Ownership Expectations

This role will suit you if you:

  • Take ownership of your work from start to finish, across client delivery, product development, internal platforms and advisory work.
  • Prioritise delivery timelines and outcomes, and are comfortable working to client deadlines and internal roadmap commitments.
  • Enjoy problem-solving where requirements evolve and you need to shape the approach yourself.
  • Are genuinely curious about how AI is changing software development, and regularly try new tools and models just to see what they can do.

This role may not be the right fit if you:

  • Don't use AI coding agents in your day-to-day development work yet.
  • Have never deployed something you built to production and kept it running.
  • Have worked with LLMs only through a chat interface, and never through an API or in code.
  • Would rather not present to clients or run a session in front of a team.
  • Prefer work that comes with a clear spec and a fixed backlog.
  • Haven't tried a new AI tool or model in the last month just to see what it can do.
  • Are looking for a pure research role focused on training or fine-tuning models.
  • Would find it frustrating to rework something you built a few months ago because the tools have moved on.

AI & Tooling Expectations

  • A strong interest in AI, in how it can help software development, and in how the way we build software is changing.
  • We expect you to build with AI agents as your default way of working, setting clear intent and carefully verifying what comes back.
  • You should know where the tools fall down – invented APIs, code that looks right but isn't, tests that pass without testing anything – and review agent output with the same care as any code going to production.

Salary & Compensation

Exact package and contract structure will be discussed during the recruitment process.

Benefits

  • 28 paid vacation leave days per year.
  • Paid sick leave.
  • Maltese public holidays.
  • Private health insurance.
  • IT equipment provided.
  • Extra hours worked = extra paid time off.
  • Yearly performance-based bonuses.
  • Yearly salary reviews.
  • Training / career development budget.

Location & Work Eligibility

Candidates must be based in either Malta or elsewhere within the European Union.

Candidates based in the EU must be legally entitled to work remotely from their country of residence and must not require sponsorship. Relocation support is not available for this role.

Equal Opportunity Statement

At Cleverbit, we're committed to building an inclusive workplace where everyone feels respected and valued. We welcome candidates from all walks of life, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, or sexual orientation.
