ASL Interpreter

We are seeking a qualified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to support deaf and hard-of-hearing students in a middle school educational environment. This role is essential in facilitating effective communication between students, teachers, administrators, counselors, peers, and families while promoting student independence and academic success.

Location: Virginia Beach, VA

Employment type: Direct Hire, Contract to Hire, or Contract

Target pay: $50-$85/hr. DOE

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Successful completion of the EIPA Written Test with a passing score of 75% or higher.
• Minimum 3.5 score on the EIPA Performance Test or an equivalent certification recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
• Strong proficiency in American Sign Language and educational interpreting.
• Ability to work independently and maintain professional standards of confidentiality and ethics.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate degree or higher
• Previous experience interpreting in a K-12 educational setting.
• Experience supporting middle school-aged students.

Responsibilities

• Interpret classroom instruction and educational content for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
• Facilitate communication between students, teachers, administrators, counselors, and support staff.
• Provide interpreting support during meetings, conferences, assemblies, field trips, performances, and school-sponsored activities.
• Support student participation in extracurricular and after-school activities as needed.
• Prepare for assignments to ensure accurate and effective interpretation.
• Serve as a resource to staff regarding interpreting services and Deaf culture awareness.
• Encourage student self-advocacy, independence, and communication development.
