What they need

100+ Years of Experience at Work for You!

Since 1920, the professional men and women of Hubbard Construction have literally paved the way for hundreds of public and private projects that have supported Florida's rise to prominence.

Hubbard is one of Florida's largest heavy civil construction companies. We are proud to be a part of Florida's history and we are eager to continue to serve the Florida market and beyond.

The scope of Hubbard's work includes complex highway projects, site development, paving, utility and drainage systems, surveying, RAP and hot mix sales, and state-of-the-art bridge building. We provide multiple delivery systems in design-build, bid-build, public/private-partnerships and design-build finance.

Hubbard Construction's parent company, Vinci, operates through a network of 330 agencies and 770 production sites, in 17 countries around the world.

General Overview
We are seeking a skilled, experienced Heavy Equipment Operator Instructor to join our Training & Development team. The instructor delivers practical, technical training to employees with little or no equipment operating experience, assesses operator candidates, and supports the continued development of experienced operators. Training is delivered through Hubbard Academy's Heavy Equipment Simulators, mobile training trailers, and hands-on field instruction. The ideal candidate combines extensive operating experience with strong teaching skills and an understanding of adult learning principles.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Deliver hands-on instruction using equipment simulators, heavy equipment, and construction support tools.
  • Use Heavy Equipment Simulators to build control familiarity, reinforce safe operating practices, and assess trainee performance before hands-on equipment operation.
  • Coordinate mobile training trailer scheduling and site setup with operations to bring training to crews at designated locations.
  • Perform pre-use checks of simulators and training trailer equipment; maintain organized training spaces and report equipment or maintenance needs.
  • Assist in developing and delivering training on basic heavy equipment operations.
  • Assess operator candidates and trainees to identify skill levels, training needs, and appropriate learning support.
  • Observe and evaluate trainee performance during practical sessions; provide clear, constructive feedback and additional coaching as needed.
  • Provide new-hire training, on-the-job training support, and skills development for existing employees.
  • Develop and maintain training schedules in coordination with departments and operations; communicate schedules, reminders, and exceptions to managers.
  • Monitor the use of Hubbard Academy resources and prepare utilization reports.
  • Use active learning, active listening, critical thinking, and adult learning strategies to engage trainees and reinforce learning.
  • Maintain accurate training records, assessment results, and documentation; share information with appropriate stakeholders.
  • Stay current on industry practices and incorporate relevant improvements into training programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Candidates must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily. The requirements below describe the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for the role. Reasonable accommodations will be considered to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Extensive operating experience and knowledge of heavy equipment, including excavators, backhoes, off-road trucks, bulldozers, front-end loaders, and motor graders.
  • Highway or roadway construction experience preferred. This position requires demonstrated heavy equipment operating experience and is typically not an entry-level role.

Skills, Attributes, and Knowledge

  • Strong teaching and facilitation skills, with knowledge of adult education and learning principles.
  • Clear verbal communication and the ability to explain technical concepts to audiences with varied experience levels.
  • Ability to work effectively with people across organizational levels, functions, cultures, and locations.
  • Ability to adapt instruction to changing demands and individual learning needs.
  • Ability to engage and motivate trainees to achieve learning and organizational objectives.
  • Mechanical aptitude and the ability to apply mechanical concepts in practical training.
  • Strong organizational skills, including training schedule development and coordination.
  • Ability to create or use assessments to evaluate trainee progress and training effectiveness.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to learn simulator software, select training exercises, and review performance reports.

Physical Demands
The following demands are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Routinely work eight hours per day, five days per week.
  • Occasionally stoop and bend; frequently walk or stand on sand, gravel, pavement, dirt, and other ground surfaces.
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Use hands and feet to operate steering wheels, joysticks, levers, pedals, and other equipment controls.
  • Climb stairs and vertical ladders to access equipment controls, maintaining three points of contact.
  • Use close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Maintain sustained attention and communicate effectively through spoken and written information.
  • Work with limited exposure to dust, dirt, grease, and noise; wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses and a hard hat.

Work Environment
Approximately 75% of the work is performed outdoors and 25% in an indoor training environment, including classrooms and mobile training trailers.
