Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Assembly Process Engineer to support the assembly and integration of a highly complex, large-scale tokamak system. In this role, you will help develop, document, and execute the processes required to safely and efficiently assemble complex mechanical systems and sub-assemblies.

You will work closely with design engineers, assembly engineers, tooling specialists, field personnel, and technicians to develop practical assembly strategies, define sequencing, identify required tooling and equipment, and create detailed work instructions for execution in the field.

This is a hands-on, collaborative role for an engineer or technical professional who is comfortable working with large, complex mechanical structures and translating engineering requirements into clear, executable assembly processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop assembly plans and detailed work instructions for the handling, manipulation, positioning, integration, and installation of complex mechanical assemblies.
  • Collaborate with engineering and design teams to determine optimal assembly sequences, methods, tooling, safety measures, specifications, and execution strategies.
  • Develop clear and comprehensive work instruction packages for use by field assembly technicians.
  • Plan and document the movement and positioning of large components, ensuring proper access and identifying potential interferences with surrounding systems.
  • Ensure appropriate personnel access, tooling access, and workspace requirements are incorporated into assembly procedures.
  • Support the integration of part traceability requirements throughout the assembly process using manufacturing management, ERP, and MES systems.
  • Troubleshoot assembly challenges and non-conformances using strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Develop and maintain assembly work orders and documentation to establish efficient assembly and testing sequences.
  • Improve work instruction and work-order processes to increase standardization, efficiency, safety, clarity, and communication.
  • Work directly with assembly engineers, tooling engineers, designers, coordinators, and technicians during on-site assembly activities.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on safer, simpler, more efficient, and cost-effective assembly methods.
  • Support the successful integration of large and highly complex components into an overall precision-engineered system.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of technical experience integrating complex, large-scale mechanical structures or equipment, such as those found in aerospace, energy, chemical processing, heavy industrial, or similarly demanding environments.
  • Experience developing and maintaining detailed assembly work instructions or work instruction packages.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a strong commitment to quality.
  • Strong safety awareness and a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating hazards.
  • Ability to clearly communicate, present, and critically evaluate technical ideas.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to use data to support decisions.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, design, manufacturing, and field operations teams.

Preferred

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in engineering, manufacturing, mechanical technology, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience with metrology and precision assembly.
  • Experience with high-vacuum systems, projects, or processes.
  • Experience using ERP, MES, or other manufacturing management systems.
  • Experience with Siemens NX or similar CAD software.
  • Experience planning or executing lifts and movements of components weighing 10 tons or more .
  • Experience working with large, complex, precision-engineered mechanical systems.
  • Experience developing standardized manufacturing or assembly processes.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to occasionally lift and handle objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, type, and perform other activities for extended periods.
