What they need

VIY Assessors

Job specification, September 2026

About Volunteer It Yourself (VIY)

VIY combines volunteering and DIY by challenging young people aged 14-24 to learn trade and building skills, on the job, by helping to refurbish and transform youth and community facilities in need of essential improvements (e.g. youth clubs, community centres, sports clubs, and arts, music and cultural venues).

The majority of young people who take part and benefit are disengaged or excluded from mainstream education and training, at risk of disengagement, and/or unemployed.

VIY participants are mentored by professional tradespeople and gain City & Guilds Entry Level 3 accreditations as well as access to further training, work placement and apprenticeship opportunities with local providers and employers beyond the project.

The Role

Job purpose

As an approved City & Guilds training provider, VIY directly manages and delivers our own training programs. We support the entire learner journey using our own resources, including multiple project sites and a dedicated network of skilled mentors.

We are looking for a passionate Freelance Assessor to join our team and grow their personal freelance portfolio. In this role, you will work alongside our mentors to help learners successfully achieve their City & Guilds accreditations. You will be responsible for evaluating learner work and knowledge, ensuring all demonstrated skills meet City & Guilds standards. Our current projects focus on carpentry, plumbing, painting and decorating (P&D), with an exciting new focus on retrofit and environmental accreditations.
