What they need

Own the network. Influence the decisions that shape it.

Wellington Electricity powers over 170,000 homes and businesses across the capital and is recognised as one of New Zealand’s most reliable electricity distribution companies.

Behind that performance is a team of engineers who don’t just deliver work, they own asset performance, manage lifecycle risk, and make the calls that shape how the network evolves.

Help shape the future of New Zealand's electricity network

Are you passionate about asset performance, reliability, and ensuring critical infrastructure delivers for communities every day?

We're seeking multiple Asset Engineers to join our growing team and play a key role in the management, optimisation, and long-term planning of high-voltage electricity assets across our network.

This is an opportunity to work at the heart of New Zealand's energy transition, helping deliver safe, reliable and sustainable power while influencing strategic investment decisions for critical electrical infrastructure.

About the Role

As an Asset Engineer, you'll be responsible for the lifecycle management of substation assets, ensuring they operate safely, efficiently and reliably throughout their service life.

You'll combine technical expertise, asset analytics and engineering judgement to assess asset health, identify risks, develop maintenance and renewal strategies, and support investment planning decisions.

Working closely with operations, maintenance, project delivery and planning teams, you'll help drive optimal outcomes for both the network and our customers.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Developing and implementing asset management and lifecycle strategies for substation assets
  • Monitoring asset condition, performance and reliability trends
  • Analysing asset health data and recommending interventions
  • Supporting risk-based decision-making and investment planning
  • Leading or contributing to failure investigations and root cause analysis
  • Identifying opportunities to improve asset performance and reliability
  • Providing engineering expertise to capital projects and maintenance programmes
  • Collaborating with operations and field teams to deliver best-for-network outcomes
  • Maintaining asset data, technical records and engineering documentation
  • Supporting long-term asset planning, replacement and renewal programmes

What We're Looking For

We're interested in hearing from engineers who have experience in one or more of the following:

  • Asset management of electrical network infrastructure
  • Zone substations and high-voltage equipment
  • Power transformers, switchgear, protection systems or secondary systems
  • Network reliability and asset performance analysis
  • Maintenance strategy development
  • Condition monitoring and diagnostics
  • Failure investigations and root cause analysis
  • Asset risk assessments and investment planning
  • Electricity generation, transmission or distribution environments

You'll likely bring:

  • A degree qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Experience working within electricity generation, transmission or distribution
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to interpret technical and asset condition data
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • A collaborative approach and desire to contribute to continuous improvement

Why Join Us?

  • Meaningful work supporting critical national infrastructure
  • Opportunity to influence major asset investment decisions
  • Exposure to a broad range of high-voltage electrical assets
  • Career development within a growing and evolving industry
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Supportive and collaborative team culture
  • Competitive salary and benefits package

Why Wellington Electricity
