What they need

Job Objective

Own asset governance, lifecycle strategy, reliability direction, asset risk management, and asset information discipline for MGEN Thermal's generating and energy storage assets, including thermal power generation and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) assets. Ensure MGEN Thermal assets are managed as long-term value-generating physical assets across their full lifecycle — from project handover through operations, maintenance, refurbishment, life extension, and retirement. This is a head-office asset-owner governance role: it sets standards, methods, decision support, assurance, and improvement direction, while Plant Managers and site teams retain accountability for safe day-to-day operations and execution. The role also owns the fleet's Reliability Engineering and Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) program directly.

Key Accountabilities

1. Asset Strategy, Governance and Lifecycle Planning

  • Design and own the Thermal Business Unit asset management framework, including asset scope, class strategies, lifecycle planning methods, governance forums, decision rights, and controls across head office and sites.
  • Translate business, commercial, reliability, safety, environmental, and regulatory objectives into measurable asset management objectives, long-term asset plans, and annual execution priorities.
  • Lead the preparation and periodic review of the Strategic Asset Management Plan for all assigned thermal and BESS assets.
  • Lead the development of five-year, ten-year, and long-range lifecycle plans covering major inspections, overhauls, refurbishments, replacements, upgrades, life extension, and retirement.
  • Ensure asset plans are integrated with budgets, planned outages, market commitments, fuel strategy, and site execution capacity.

2. Asset Risk, Criticality and Asset Health Management

  • Establish and maintain the asset risk management process, including consequence criteria, likelihood scales, risk tolerance levels, and escalation thresholds.
  • Develop and maintain the asset criticality methodology using safety, environmental, regulatory, commercial, reliability, and financial consequence criteria.
  • Maintain the portfolio asset risk register and ensure major asset risks are identified, assessed, prioritized, treated, monitored, and reviewed.
  • Lead asset health assessments for boilers, turbines, generators, transformers, switchyards, diesel engines, BESS assets, and balance-of-plant systems.
  • Escalate intolerable or increasing asset risks to senior management and ensure risk treatment actions are funded, tracked, and verified for effectiveness.

3. Reliability Engineering, Maintenance Strategy and Outage Governance

  • Own the Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) program for MGEN Thermal, including methodology standards, facilitation quality, evidence thresholds, and assurance of RCFA outputs produced across head office and plant sites.
  • Lead or facilitate RCFA investigations for significant, repeat, and high-consequence failures, and conduct fleet-wide bad actor analysis to identify the equipment and failure modes with the greatest cumulative impact on reliability and availability.
  • Establish and assure maintenance strategy development and review, including reliability-centered maintenance principles and alignment of maintenance strategies to asset criticality and risk.
  • Govern planned outage scope development, statutory inspection planning, major overhaul planning, discovery work management, outage deferral risk assessment, and post-outage review.
  • Drive defect elimination programs across the fleet, tracking recurring failure patterns through to verified closure, and build reliability engineering capability at site technical teams through coaching and methodology guidance.

4. Thermal and BESS Lifecycle Optimization

  • Ensure thermal asset strategies address boiler integrity, turbine and generator condition, transformer health, fuel handling systems, and balance-of-plant systems.
  • Ensure BESS strategies address battery degradation, state of health, cycle life, thermal management, fire detection and suppression, and end-of-life planning.
  • Lead or coordinate life extension, remaining useful life, refurbishment, replacement, and retirement studies for assets approaching design life, warranty thresholds, or unacceptable risk levels.
  • Develop critical spares and obsolescence management plans for long-lead, high-risk, obsolete, and safety-critical equipment.

5. Asset Information, Enterprise Asset Management and Performance Reporting

  • Own the Thermal Business Unit asset information governance process, including asset hierarchy, naming conventions, equipment classifications, criticality fields, failure codes, and maintenance records.
  • Ensure Maximo or the approved Enterprise Asset Management system contains accurate, complete, and decision-useful asset information for maintenance execution, reliability analysis, risk management, and executive reporting.
  • Develop portfolio dashboards and periodic reports covering asset health, asset risk, reliability, availability, forced outage drivers, critical spares, and BESS performance.
  • Drive data quality improvement where incomplete or inaccurate asset data affects maintenance execution, risk assessment, or investment decisions.

6. Investment, Stakeholder, Compliance and Continuous Improvement Governance

  • Review and challenge asset-related capital expenditure, major maintenance, replacement, and augmentation proposals to ensure each has a clear asset need, technical basis, risk assessment, and lifecycle cost justification.
  • Coordinate with Finance, Regulatory, HSSE, Procurement, Supply Chain, and site teams to align asset decisions with budgets, obligations, permits, and stakeholder expectations.
  • Define asset management requirements for contractors, OEMs, and technology suppliers, and ensure deliverables are complete and usable by operations and maintenance teams.
  • Conduct internal assurance reviews of asset information, maintenance strategy compliance, project handover, and lifecycle plan implementation.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Energy, Industrial Engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in power generation, asset management, plant engineering, reliability, maintenance, operations, or technical services, including a minimum of 5 years in a leadership, supervisory, or portfolio governance role.
  • Demonstrated experience in thermal power generation (coal, diesel, or gas), including steam cycle, electrical, and balance-of-plant systems.
  • Demonstrated experience leading or facilitating Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) investigations using structured methodologies (RCA, Apollo, TapRooT, Kepner-Tregoe, or equivalent).
  • Experience using enterprise asset management systems, preferably Maximo, including asset hierarchy, master data, preventive maintenance plans, and reporting.
  • Preferred experience with Battery Energy Storage System assets, including degradation, battery management systems, fire safety, and end-of-life planning.
  • Professional engineering license or equivalent preferred; graduate degree in Engineering Management, Asset Management, or Business Administration is an advantage.
