Assistant Checkout Manager

About the role

FreshChoice Barrington is undergoing a full store upgrade, and the checkout area is being refreshed with a new modern look and improved layout. Working closely with the Checkout Manager and wider management team, you will play an important role in the daily operation of the checkout department, supporting the Checkout Manager and helping lead, train and develop Checkout Supervisors and team members. This is a long-term leadership opportunity for someone who is reliable, organised, confident and ready to take on greater responsibility.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Checkout Manager with the day-to-day running and management of the checkout department
• Assist with staff planning, deployment, breaks and shift coordination
• Support, coach and develop Checkout Supervisors, helping them build their leadership skills
• Guide and support checkout team members, particularly during busy periods
• Help ensure the checkout department operates efficiently and to a high standard
• Ensure customers receive friendly, professional and efficient service
• Monitor queues and staff coverage to keep the front end running smoothly
• Assist with training and onboarding of new team members
• Handle customer enquiries and complaints professionally
• Take responsibility for the checkout department when the Checkout Manager is unavailable

About you

• Previous checkout supervisory or management experience
• Supermarket or retail experience is preferred
• Manager Certificate and LCQ (Licence Controller Qualification)
• Strong customer service and communication skills
• Confident leading, coaching and supporting a team
• Able to train and develop other team members
• Organised, reliable and able to work in a fast-paced environment
• Confident making decisions and taking responsibility
• Good attention to detail
• Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure
