Assistant Controller

Are you looking to be the CFO's go-to accounting partner? Our client is a young and growing venture capital firm with a portfolio of brands in some of the most exciting consumer-facing industries, as well as entertainment and sports. Each business runs as its own entity, with its own vendors and its own books, and they need a sharp accounting leader to keep it all running smoothly. As Assistant Controller , you'll be the most senior in-house accounting person, reporting directly to the CFO. This is a rare chance to step up into real ownership, build the function as the portfolio grows, and take on more responsibility over time. This role is onsite 5 days a week in West LA.

What You'll Own

• The multi-entity close: Run month-end across multiple companies, including reconciliations, accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, and intercompany schedules. Deliver a close package that's clean, supported, and ready for review.
• Reporting leadership can act on: Prepare monthly P&Ls, balance sheets, and supporting schedules for each entity. Dig into variances and come to the table with answers, not just questions.
• Clean books across every entity: Keep coding accurate across entities, classes, and GL accounts. Catch miscodings, duplicates, and out-of-period items before they reach the close.
• Your outsourced team: Set expectations and review the work of outsourced support on AP, expenses, and transaction coding. Make sure everything is right before it hits the books.
• Building the infrastructure: Spot gaps in AP, expense, and close workflows and fix them. Create the documentation, controls, and schedules that let the function scale as new entities come on.
• A true CFO partnership: Be the CFO's main internal accounting resource. Take on fast-moving projects, flag the accounting impact of new deals and entities early, and grow your scope as the company grows.

What You Bring

• Minimum 5+ years of progressive accounting experience in the consumer, entertainment, or sports industry; prior experience in Big 4 audit is a big plus
• Proven hands-on ownership of month-end close, reconciliations, accruals, and financial statement preparation
• Multi-entity accounting experience with subsidiaries, intercompany activity, or similar complex structures is a big plus
• Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and modern spend platforms like Ramp, Brex, Divvy, or Bill.com
• AI fluency: You already use AI tools to work faster and smarter, and you're excited to bring that into how the team operates.
• A detail-obsessed approach without being slow. You close loops without being reminded, handle ambiguity with confidence, and know when to escalate.
