Assistant Controller - Investments

A publicly traded, multibillion-dollar diversified alternative investments firm spanning most major asset classes.

Role Overview

The Controller team plays a central role in ensuring the integrity of the company's management and financial reporting and the effectiveness of its internal control environment. We are seeking an individual to join the Controller team, reporting directly to the Chief Accounting Officer (CAO). This role owns the management and oversight of investment accounting for the platform, including day-to-day management of an outsourced investment accounting team, investment reporting and forecasting, and coordination with the valuation function.

Key Responsibilities

• Investment Accounting & Outsourced Team Management
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and daily point of escalation for the outsourced investment accounting team, which performs the investment accounting close on both a U.S. GAAP and NAIC statutory (STAT) basis.
  • Manage the day-to-day relationship with the outsourced provider, including work product review, timeline management, and issue resolution.
  • Oversee use of the Clearwater investment accounting platform for reporting and reconciliation.
  • Support investment accounting close and reporting across the full range of asset classes on the platform, including private credit and other holdings typical of a balance sheet.
• Investment Reporting, Forecasting & Analysis
  • Prepare forecasts of investment income, portfolio performance, and investment-related expenses.
  • Develop reporting and analysis of investment portfolio performance for internal management and the Board.
  • Incorporate valuation outputs from the valuation team into the accounting close and reporting process.
  • Provide the valuation team with accounting-based reporting to support their valuation process.
• General Accounting & Controls Support
  • Support the broader management company close process as needed.
  • Identify and execute on process improvement initiatives within relevant processes.
  • Maintain assigned SOX controls relevant to investment accounting and reporting.
  • Support preparation of investment-related disclosures and schedules for SEC filings, as needed.
  • Provide guidance to any direct reports or offshore/central office team members supporting investment accounting, as the function grows.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred but not required.
• 6 to 11 years of relevant public accounting or industry experience.
• Experience with U.S. GAAP investment accounting is required.
• Experience with NAIC statutory investment accounting preferred.
• Experience managing or understanding outsourced service provider relationships preferred.
• Experience with the Clearwater investment accounting platform, or a similar system, preferred.
• Familiarity with private credit and other alternative asset classes is a plus.
• Strong analytical and forecasting skills.
• Requires employees to be in the office 5 days a week.
• Background in asset management or alternative investments is required.
