Criminal prosecutors are given substantial responsibility early in their careers and generally start handling various cases beginning with making charging determinations, overseeing discovery, handling pre-trial litigation, plea negotiating with defense counsels, and ending with an agreed to sentence or presentation of the case in a jury trial. Opportunities to handle more serious and complex cases are afforded as more experience is gained.

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

• Prosecution of state law violations in criminal court
• Preparing cases including research, brief writing, drafting pleadings, trial preparation, eliciting testimony, and oral arguments before a jury or judge
• Plea negotiating with defense counsels
• Assisting law enforcement agencies in investigations and charging decisions
• Representing the state in mental health commitments, fine collection, juvenile delinquencies, and child welfare cases
• Attending and presenting professional development trainings

Requirements

• Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Admission to the bar of the State of Iowa, or eligible to take and pass the next available Iowa Bar Examination

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $80,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
