What they need

ESC has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Design Engineer to support the design and engineering of our client’s snow and ice equipment and piers and accessories. This is an entry-level position intended for a recent college or technical school graduate who is interested in developing a career in mechanical product design and engineering. The Assistant Design Engineer will work closely with the Senior Design Engineer and initially focus on CAD work, drawings, product documentation, testing, inspection, and other engineering support activities.

As the individual develops greater product knowledge, technical skills, and experience, responsibilities may expand to include more independent design and engineering assignments, with the opportunity to progress into a Design Engineer position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create and update 3D models, assemblies, and 2D manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Make drawing and model revisions based on direction, markups, engineering changes, and product improvements.
  • Assist with maintaining engineering drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), specifications, and other product documentation.
  • Support engineering change activities for existing products and components.
  • Assist with the inspection and measurement of components and finished products to verify conformance with engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Assist Design Engineers with prototype builds, product testing, data collection, and documentation of results.
  • Perform basic engineering calculations and analysis under the direction of experienced engineering personnel.
  • Support the engineering team with 3D scanning, measurement, and reverse engineering of components when needed.
  • Work with Production, Purchasing, Quality, Technical Service, and suppliers to help resolve drawing, component, and manufacturing questions.
  • Develop an understanding of Sno-Way and Pier of d'Nort products, manufacturing methods, materials, and design standards.
  • Assist with troubleshooting product and production issues and documenting corrective changes.
  • Perform other engineering and product support assignments as needed.

Education and Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Mechanical Design Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field.
  • Entry-level candidates and recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Coursework or hands-on experience with 3D CAD software; SolidWorks experience is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical drawings, dimensioning, tolerances, and drafting practices.
  • Exposure to GD&T is preferred but not required.
  • Basic understanding of common manufacturing processes such as sheet metal fabrication, machining, welding, and assembly is helpful.
  • Comfortable working in both an office/design environment and on the manufacturing floor.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.
  • Good problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, and other departments.

Development Opportunity

  • The Assistant Design Engineer position is intended to provide hands-on experience across product design, manufacturing, testing, and engineering support. The successful candidate will receive progressively more challenging assignments as technical skills and product knowledge develop.
  • Demonstrated growth in CAD and design capabilities, engineering judgment, product knowledge, project responsibility, and problem-solving may provide an opportunity for advancement into a Design Engineer position.
