About the Role
Jeff Hays Films is looking for an Assistant Video Editor to join our documentary post-production team for a 12-week assignment. You will work in Adobe Premiere Pro to edit a health documentary from a provided script, bringing together interviews, B-roll, and music to create an engaging story.
This opportunity is suited to someone with foundational editing experience who is ready to contribute to a professional production. Film-school assignments, personal projects, freelance work, and previous editing roles are all relevant experience. You do not need years of professional credits, but you should be comfortable editing in Premiere Pro and have examples of your work to share.
We’re looking for someone who enjoys storytelling, pays attention to detail, and can take direction while making thoughtful creative choices.
Responsibilities
- Edit from a provided script: Assemble interview footage into clear, well-paced sequences that follow the documentary’s structure.
- Find and incorporate B-roll: Gather, organize, and place relevant footage to illustrate the subjects being discussed and add visual interest.
- Select and place music: Use appropriate music to support the story’s tone and pacing while keeping dialogue clear.
- Refine edits: Incorporate feedback from producers and other team members, making revisions to improve clarity, flow, and storytelling.
- Keep projects organized: Maintain clearly labeled footage, audio, sequences, and project files so the team can work efficiently.
- Prepare cuts for review: Export review versions and check your work for missing media, distracting edits, and basic audio or visual issues.
What We’re Looking For
You should have a working knowledge of Adobe Premiere Pro, including organizing media, cutting interviews, working with multiple video and audio tracks, and exporting finished sequences.
A basic understanding of pacing, music selection, and how B-roll supports a story is important. You should also be dependable, organized, comfortable asking questions, and receptive to constructive feedback.
An interest in documentary filmmaking and health-related storytelling is welcome. Editing ability and a willingness to learn matter more than an extensive résumé.
Applicants must be available to work in person during the Monday–Friday schedule for the full 12-week assignment.
How to Apply
Please submit your résumé and links to examples of your editing work. Personal projects, student films, documentary sequences, and previous client work are welcome.
Include a brief note about your experience with Adobe Premiere Pro and your availability. For collaborative projects, please explain which parts of the editing you handled.
