We are passionate about unlocking each student’s potential by offering an alternative to mainstream education. Our vision is for every student to feel safe and happy, achieve their potential, and have a bright future.

We teach in small groups with a dedicated and experienced teaching team, ensuring that each student receives individual attention and care. We create individual learning packages to support our students' needs.

About the Role

The Assistant Head (SENCO) is the school’s lead on inclusion. As a member of the senior leadership team, the postholder sets the strategic direction for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) provision, carries the operational SENCO role, and makes sure that every student’s identified needs are understood, planned for and met — with ambition, and without compromising their dignity or chronological age.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic leadership

  • Contribute as a member of the senior leadership team to school self-evaluation, improvement planning and the strategic direction of the school.

Leading on inclusion

  • Champion an inclusive culture in which every student is known, valued and held to high academic and personal expectations.

SENCO responsibilities

  • Act as the school’s SENCO, working in line with the SEND Code of Practice: 0 to 25 years and the Children and Families Act 2014
  • Coordinate the identification, assessment and provision for all students with SEND, leading the graduated approach of assess, plan, do, review.
  • Ensure that Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan outcomes, and the provision specified in Section F, are implemented in every lesson, and monitor this through quality assurance.
  • Ensure that all pen portraits, Assess, Plan, Do, Review (APDR) cycles, individual education plans (IEPs) and annual reviews are recorded, tracked and monitored on Provision Map.

Safeguarding and safer recruitment

In Toto Ed is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The postholder will have regular unsupervised contact with students, and the role is therefore exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975.

  • The appointment is subject to an enhanced DBS certificate with a children's barred list check, satisfactory references, verification of identity, right to work and qualifications, and a check of employment history and any gaps. In line with Keeping Children Safe in Education, an online search may be carried out on shortlisted candidates. Shortlisted candidates will be given the opportunity to discuss anything that search raises at interview.
  • Applicants must declare relevant information in line with the guidance on filtered cautions and convictions. A criminal record will not necessarily bar an applicant from appointment. The postholder must complete safeguarding induction and annual refresher training, know how to raise a concern, and report any concern about a student or about the conduct of an adult to the Designated Safeguarding Lead without delay.
  • The postholder works closely with the safeguarding team and holds sensitive information about students and families. They must apply data minimisation, share information only on a need-to-know basis, and maintain confidentiality at all times.
