Assistant Instructor– Gr. 1–6 After-School Program

We are looking for a dependable, enthusiastic, and supportive Assistant Instructor to join our Gr. 1–6 after-school program. This is a great opportunity for current college students, aspiring educators, retired educators, paraprofessionals, NYS-certified teacher assistants, or anyone who enjoys working with children and wants to make a positive impact.

Preference will be given to candidates who are:

• NYS-certified Teacher Assistants with a Level II, Level III, Pre-Professional or Professional Teaching Assistant certificate
• Current or former paraprofessionals
• College students majoring in education, early childhood education, special education, or a related field

As an Assistant Instructor, you will work alongside our lead instructors to help students stay on track with their schoolwork, provide individual support when needed, and contribute to a safe, structured, and encouraging learning environment.

This is a support role and is ideal for someone who is patient, responsible, coachable, and enjoys being part of a team.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Meet and pick up students from assigned public schools.

• Assist with student arrival, transitions, and classroom routines.

• Support the lead teacher with daily classroom activities and assignments.

• Help students stay organized and focused while completing their homework.

• Assist students with understanding instructions and completing assignments when needed.

• Check homework for completion and bring questions or concerns to the lead teacher.

• Provide one-on-one or small-group assistance under the direction of the classroom teacher.

• Help prepare, distribute, and organize learning materials and enrichment activities.

• Supervise students during designated classroom activities, transitions, and breaks.

• Encourage positive behavior, good study habits, and respectful interactions.

• Help maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming classroom.

• Follow classroom procedures and support the teacher in maintaining appropriate order and discipline.

• Communicate respectfully and professionally with students, parents, and team members.

• Serve as a positive role model for students.

Education and Skills Requirements

• At least one year of college-level education required.

• Preference will be given to candidates who hold an NYS Teacher Assistant certification, have experience as paraprofessionals; or are currently majoring in education or a related field.

• Previous experience working with children, tutoring, teaching, childcare, or youth programs preferred.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Patient, dependable, and comfortable working with elementary-aged children.

• Ability to follow directions and work effectively as part of a team.

• Willingness to learn and accept coaching and feedback.

• Strong work ethic, professionalism, and integrity.

• Ability to build positive relationships with students and team members.

• Reliable attendance and punctuality.
