What they need

Survey Assistant – UK Based with Overseas Work

B Y Surveys Ltd is recruiting a full-time Survey Assistant to support a range of land surveying and engineering projects throughout the UK.

The successful applicant will also be required to undertake an initial extended deployment to the Falkland Islands and must therefore be comfortable working away from home for periods of approximately 10–12 weeks.

Following the overseas deployment, the position will continue in the UK, supporting B Y Surveys Ltd on topographical, engineering, control and other survey projects.

Key responsibilities

  • Assisting land surveyors with topographical and engineering survey work.
  • Carrying survey poles, prisms, tripods, targets and other equipment.
  • Setting up, moving and packing away survey equipment.
  • Supporting total station, GNSS and levelling operations.
  • Marking and identifying survey stations and control points.
  • Helping maintain clear communication between members of the survey team.
  • Completing basic site records and daily equipment checks.
  • Keeping equipment, vehicles and working areas organised and secure.
  • Following project method statements, risk assessments and site instructions.
  • Working safely around vehicles, construction activities and operational areas.
  • Undertaking other reasonable duties required to support the survey team.

Essential requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be currently based in the United Kingdom.
  • Have the legal right to work in the UK.
  • Hold a full, valid UK driving licence.
  • Be able to satisfy all client security and pre-employment screening requirements, including BPSS where required.
  • Be able to provide a complete and verifiable employment and residential history for at least the previous three years.
  • Be willing and able to work in the Falkland Islands for extended periods.
  • Be comfortable working outdoors in cold, windy and changeable weather.
  • Be capable of undertaking a physically demanding field-based role, with reasonable adjustments where applicable.
  • Be prepared to work long shifts and six-day working weeks when required by the project.
  • Be dependable, punctual and able to follow instructions accurately.
  • Work well as part of a small team in a remote environment.
  • Be willing to comply with all Falkland Islands entry, work-permit and project requirements.

Desirable experience

The following would be advantageous but is not essential:

  • Previous experience as a survey assistant, chainperson, site operative or construction labourer.
  • Experience working with land surveyors or civil engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with Trimble surveying equipment.
  • Experience working away from home or on overseas projects.
  • A current CSCS card.
  • First-aid, manual-handling or other relevant health and safety training.
  • Previous BPSS approval or experience working on government or defence projects.

Working conditions

The role is expected to involve long working days, potentially up to 12 hours per day and six days per week, depending on project requirements.

Travel to and from the Falkland Islands and project accommodation will be arranged and provided by B Y Surveys Ltd. Full details of the deployment dates, working pattern, remuneration and employment package will be discussed with shortlisted candidates.

Personal qualities

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Honest, responsible and trustworthy.
  • Physically active and comfortable working outdoors.
  • Calm and sensible when working in difficult conditions.
  • Able to live and work cooperatively with colleagues for extended periods.
  • Willing to learn and develop practical surveying skills.
  • Safety-conscious and respectful of site procedures.

How to apply

Please submit an up-to-date CV together with a short covering message confirming:

  • Your current UK location.
  • That you hold a full UK driving licence.
  • Your availability for an extended Falkland Islands deployment.
  • Any surveying, construction or outdoor-working experience.
  • Any existing BPSS status, CSCS card or relevant qualifications.

Employment will be subject to satisfactory references, right-to-work verification, project security screening, medical/travel clearance where legitimately required, and approval of the necessary Falkland Islands work permit.

B Y Surveys Ltd is an equal-opportunities employer. Appointment will be based on suitability for the position and the successful completion of the project’s legal, security and operational requirements.
