About Querky

Querky is an independent café in the heart of Walthamstow, serving coffee, breakfast, brunch and an extensive food menu.

We are looking for an ambitious hands-on Assistant Café Manager who enjoys being involved in every part of running a busy café.

This is not a desk-based management role. You should be just as comfortable serving customers, making coffees, helping the kitchen, clearing tables or dealing with a delivery as you are managing staff, rotas and paperwork.

The Role

The role will typically consist of approximately:

38 hours working on the café floor
Leading shifts, supporting the team and making sure customers receive a consistently good experience.

10 hours management/admin time
Rotas, stock, staff management, ordering, training, reporting and other operational duties.

You will work closely with the Café Manager and Directors and gradually take greater responsibility for the day-to-day running of the business.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and organise the team during busy shifts
• Deliver excellent customer service and resolve customer issues
• Support FOH, barista and kitchen teams wherever required
• Make coffees, serve customers, operate the till and help with food service
• Maintain high standards of cleanliness, presentation and food safety
• Help manage staff rotas, breaks and shift organisation
• Train, support and motivate team members
• Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering
• Receive and check supplier deliveries
• Reduce waste and help control costs
• Complete opening and closing procedures
• Ensure company procedures and standards are followed
• Assist with staff performance and day-to-day people management
• Help with stock counts, cash controls and basic reporting
• Support promotions, events, sampling and other activities that help grow the café
• Step up and step in wherever needed most

Who We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who is:

• Experienced in cafés, restaurants or hospitality
• Ideally experienced as an Assistant Manager, Supervisor or Shift Manager
• Hands-on and willing to get involved
• Comfortable managing and motivating a team
• Confident dealing with customers
• Organised and able to prioritise during busy periods
• Reliable and comfortable taking responsibility
• Able to communicate clearly with staff and management
• Comfortable using basic computer systems and completing administrative work
• Interested in improving how the business operates rather than simply maintaining it

Barista experience is preferred, but we can provide additional training.

Salary & Hours

£32,500 per year

Up to £2,500 additional annual performance bonus, based on agreed business and management targets.

48 hours per week, generally split between:

~38 hours operational / on the floor
~10 hours management and office duties

Weekend / bank-holiday availability will be required as part of the role.
