What they need
The Coach & Horses, Leyton, East London
The Coach & Horses is looking for an Assistant Manager to join our friendly, independent pub in the heart of Leyton.
We’re a proper community pub with a lovely atmosphere, a strong focus on making punters feel welcome with plenty going on. With over 20 lines of beer, a wide selection of wines, spirits and soft drinks, alongside Nepalese food and pub classics, there’s always something happening at The Coach.
We’re looking for someone who enjoys being at the heart of a busy pub — someone friendly, switched-on and confident taking responsibility for a shift, while still being part of the team.
The Role
As Assistant Manager, you’ll play an important role in the day-to-day running of the pub. No two shifts will be quite the same, and it’s a versatile role that will certainly keep you on your toes.
You’ll be responsible for helping to create the atmosphere and experience that our customers come back for, while making sure the team and the pub are running smoothly.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Running shifts and taking responsibility for the operation of the pub
- Setting the ambience, atmosphere and feel of the pub throughout the shift
- Managing and supporting the front-of-house team
- Liaising closely with the kitchen to keep service running smoothly
- Handling busy periods confidently and problem-solving in a calm and collected manner
- Using your own initiative during quieter periods to keep the pub looking, feeling and running at its best
- Managing changes to our extensive beer lines and ensuring the bar is properly set up
- Making sure sporting events are on and ready to go on time
- Helping to set up and host live music and other events
- Being involved in creating and developing new events and nights at the pub
- Helping to host and manage private parties and functions
- Maintaining our high standards of service, cleanliness and presentation
- Supporting the General Manager and wider team with the smooth running of the pub
About You
We’re looking for someone who is friendly, welcoming and naturally good with people.
You’ll ideally have experience in a senior hospitality role and be comfortable taking charge of a shift, managing a team and making decisions when things get busy.
Most importantly, you’ll have a genuine passion for great hospitality and customer service. We want our customers to feel welcome and looked after — not just served — so being personable, attentive and authentic is really important to us.
We’d also love someone who has an interest in beer and enjoys learning about what we have on the bar.
You’ll need to be:
- Confident and capable when running a shift
- Calm under pressure and a good problem solver
- A natural team player who is happy to get stuck in
- Friendly, approachable and welcoming
- Organised and able to prioritise
- Comfortable managing staff and communicating across the bar and kitchen
- Proactive, with the ability to spot what needs doing without always being asked
- Passionate about pubs, hospitality and creating a great atmosphere
Desirable Experience
Experience or an interest in any of the following would be a bonus:
- Social media
- Marketing and promotions
- Creating and organising events
- Live music
- Sports events
- Private parties and functions
- Beer and craft beer (and general drinks knowledge, wine/spirits a bonus)
What We Offer
- Competitive salary
- 28 days’ holiday per calendar year
- Staff perks and benefits including discounts when working or visiting socially
- The opportunity to be part of a friendly, independent and community-focused pub
- A varied role with plenty of opportunity to get involved and make your mark
- A genuinely social and welcoming working environment
Interested?
If you’re an experienced hospitality professional who loves the energy of a good pub, enjoys working with people and wants to be part of a team that cares about creating a great local venue, we’d love to hear from you.
Pay: £25,420.00-£44,965.40 per year
